Eh? What’s up Doc? ESPN.com is reporting that the Dodgers have entered the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. It is believed that the Dodgers have the talent to acquire Halladay should they be serious enough to want him.
If a deal is done with the Dodgers, it will probably command that the Dodgers send one of Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley. However, part of a package could include prospects Andrew Lambo, Chris Withrow, or Ethan Martin.
The good news here is that the Blue Jays are allowing teams a chance to get a contract extension done. Once that is finished though, the price is steep.
Jon’s Take: This has to get done! What did we learn from this year’s World Series? The Yankees used C.C. Sabathia to win the World Series. The Phillies used Cliff Lee to reach the World Series. However, the Dodgers acquire Vicente Padilla, and the Angels acquire Scott Kazmir and fail to reach the pinnacle.
I would do the deal instantly if it involved Billingsley, Withrow, and two lower level prospects. That might even be too much, but you know what you are getting with Halladay, plus you will have locked him up as well giving the Dodgers an established ace who will dominate the National League.
I’d flip Billingsley in a package for Halladay…Although I do believe Billingsley will perform much better than last years second half. However, it’s been seen in Billingsley for the past 2 years he just can’t handle the pressure of an ACE.
He might develop into one, but not next year and we don’t have the time to sit back and watch another postseason crumble before our Dodger loving eyes.
I wouldn’t trade Kershaw though.
I feel Halladay would only gain 3-4 wins over Billingsley at best. That’s not what’s important to me. What’s important is showing the team we’re serious contenders. Even more important, having the pitcher we need come October.
