Tweets Of The Night: Dodgers Waste Chances, Fall To Cards 3-2
The Dodgers haven’t been to the World Series in 25 years and the only thing standing in their way are the St. Louis Cardinals. The two historic franchises squared off tonight in St.Louis for Game 1 of the NLCS. The Dodgers are coming off a 3-1 series victory against the Atlanta Braves and are now in St. Louis hoping to steal home field advantage from the Cardinals.
On the mound tonight was Zack Greinke and he was looking to give the Dodgers the 1-0 series lead. Greinke last pitched in Game 2 of the NLDS and went six innings with two earned runs and allowed four hits.
On the mound for the Cardinals was 25-year-old right hander, Joe Kelly. He has minimal experience as a starter with only 31 starts in a span of two seasons. Kelly’s last start was in the NLDS against the Pirates and he went 5.1 innings with two earned runs and allowed five hits. The Cardinals had the same lineup as in the NLDS, however; the Dodgers will now have Andre Ethier in center field and batting seventh.
Let’s get to the tweets of the night.
The Cardinals walk-off on Carlos Beltran’s RBI single, 3-2. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
The Dodgers clearly do not like the way Yasiel Puig plays center field
— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) October 12, 2013

Double switch. Scott Van Slyke is going to center field. Kenley Jansen to the mound.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Jensen in to face Beltran.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Descalso’s bloop single was only 4th hit for #Cardinals since Beltran’s 2-out, 2-run double in the 3rd inning. 10 innings ago
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
According to the clock, this is officially the longest game in #Dodgers Postsesaon history.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
The Dodger bullpen should win a purple heart for this game.
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
A full baseball game has taken place at Busch Stadium since the #Dodgers and Cardinals last scored a run — 2-2 into the 13th.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Last time Dodgers were in an NLCS game that went 12 inn ’88 Game 4 at Shea vs Mets. Scioscia tied it w/HR in 9th & Gibson HR won it in 12th
— David Vassegh (@THEREAL_DV) October 12, 2013
#Dodgers now 1 for 10 with RISP, 11 LOB, 3 DPs

Chris Withrow coming out for the bottom of the 12th. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Two at-bats for Michael Young. Two double plays. Adrian Gonzalez sits on bench for fourth straight inning watching and, presumably, weeping.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 12, 2013
2 AB, 2 DP for Michael Young, in the game because Adrian Gonzalez was removed for a PR in a tie game.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Michael Young to the dish with Carl Crawford and Hanley Ramirez on first and second, respectively — one out. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Oh, look at that, taking the bat out of the hands of your best hitter, never could have seen that coming.
— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) October 12, 2013
Carl Crawford with the lead off single. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Lance Lynn coming in for the 12th. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
@markasaxon Then popped up. Tried to sell it as catch. Still had time to throw bullet to 1st, nearly get runner. #dontblinkonpuig
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Did Kenley Jansen miss the team bus or something?
— keithlaw (@keithlaw) October 12, 2013
People will rip Puig for diving for that ball, but that is some serious hand-eye coordination to catch that on a short hop while diving
— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) October 12, 2013
Scary dive there by Yasiel Puig. Amazing that it didn’t get by him
— Eric Stephen (@truebluela) October 12, 2013
To be fair to Puig, he does that all the time.
— Chad Moriyama (@ChadMoriyama) October 12, 2013
Nick Punto strikes out swinging. New pitcher for the #Dodgers, JP Howell.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Judging by how Ethier is running, it might take two more hits to score him
— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) October 12, 2013
Nick Punto hitting for Belisario.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Thank you, Beli.
— Chad Moriyama (@ChadMoriyama) October 12, 2013
A 1-2-3 10th inning for Ronald Belisario. To the 11th we go in St. Louis. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
J.P. Howell throwing in the bullpen. Left-handed hitting Kolten Wong on deck. Could be Belisario’s last batter.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Belisario to the mound for the 10th inning.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Once that ball drifted enough for Beltran to call off Jay — Mark Ellis never had a chance. Better arm, better angle
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Just awful. What a waste of an inning
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Hanley Ramirez intentionally walked. Wonder if #Cardinals would have done that with Adrian Gonzalez batting next. Instead — Michael Young
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Michael Young is on deck. Hanley Ramirez is being intentionally walked. Decision to replace Adrian Gonzalez about to go on trial here.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Yesssss!!!! A M.Ellis triple silences the crowd! But man Jay took a poor route to the ball
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Mark Ellis gets a ball past Jon Jay and he is into 3rd with a head first slide. Let’s go, #Dodgers!
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
GOT. HIM. Free Baseball in St. Louis — #Dodgers 2, Cardinals 2 through 9 innings.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Brian Wilson doesn’t consider it fun unless at least two guys get on in the 9th
— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) October 12, 2013
Brian Wilson issues a 4-pitch walk to Yadier Molina — Cards with runners on first and second. Jon Jay to the plate, two outs. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Wilson on to pitch for Greinke in the bottom of the ninth. Pray here
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Brian Wilson, not Kenley Jansen, in to face heart of St Louis order in bottom of 9th, tied 2-2.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
A 99-mph fastball gets Skip Schumaker. Brian Wilson on the receiving end of the bullpen call takes the mound at Busch Stadium, bottom 9.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Skip Schumaker on deck to pinch hit for Greinke. #Dodgers
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Now Brian Wilson is up for #Dodgers.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Brian Wilson is warming up in the #Dodgers bullpen.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Zack Greinke has first postseason start by a Dodger with 8+ IP, 2 or fewer runs since Jose Lima in 2004 NLDS Game 3. #BelieveIt
— Eric Stephen (@truebluela) October 12, 2013
That’s 104 pitches through eight for Greinke.
— Ken Gurnick (@kengurnick) October 12, 2013
A season high 10 strikeouts for Zack Greinke. Filthy. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Michael Young goes in for Adrian Gonzalez. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
If he sent Dee on that pitch like they thought he was gonna, Puig had an infield single too. This is gonna suck.
— Chad Moriyama (@ChadMoriyama) October 12, 2013
Greinke back out for the eighth. No action in the pen
— Anthony Jackson (@dodgerscribe) October 12, 2013
Super terrible strategy. You dont take out one of your biggest bats in the lineup
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Gotta wonder about the choice to take Adrian Gonzalez out of tie game in the 8th for a pinch-runner. #Dodgers might want his bat back later
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Adrian Gonzalez is out of the game. Dee Gordon is pinch-running at first base. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Yasiel Puig does it again! A 9-3 double play. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
That’s Yasiel Puig’s second 9-3 double play in five playoff games. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Yasiel Puig gets an outfield assist, DP saves Greinke. #Dodgers
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
J.P. Howell (aka “The Lefty”) is throwing in the #Dodgers bullpen.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Thanks for the free out, St. Louis! Also, for being a great fielder, Greinke.
— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) October 12, 2013
Great play by Greinke! Nails the lead runner
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Greinke starts the seventh inning having made 84 pitches and nobody throwing in the bullpen.
— Ken Gurnick (@kengurnick) October 12, 2013
Time to stretch in St. Louie — #Dodgers 2, Cardinals 2.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Old friend alert RT @jphoornstra: Former Dodger left-hander Randy Choate on the mound. #Cardinals
— Eric Stephen (@truebluela) October 12, 2013
Another One! Zack Greinke gets Matt Adams to groundout to end a perfect 6th frame. #Dodgers 2, Cardinals 2.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Puig is playing so deep on Adams, he’s standing where Nelson Cruz SHOULD’ve been playing in the 9th inning of Game 6
— Anthony Jackson (@dodgerscribe) October 12, 2013
More on Uribe: third straight game with 2 hits, 2 RBI … tied for longest such streak in postseason history with 5 others
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) October 12, 2013
#Cardinals Joe Kelly 1st 3 innings — 55 pitches, 2 runs, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 1 HBP. Past 3 innings — 40 pitches, 0 runs, 2 baserunners (1Bs)
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Mattingly realized Greinke is a better hitter than any of his options.
— Chad Moriyama (@ChadMoriyama) October 12, 2013
That’s 8 K for Greinke thru 5 IP. Season high: 9.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Lance Lynn and Seth Maness are warming in the #Cardinals‘ pen.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
At the end of four innings at Busch Stadium, #Dodgers 2, Cardinals 2. #ITFDB
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Zack Greinke: 23 P first two innings, 24 in the third. #Dodgers
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Andre Ethier jumped so high his glove was above the ball. He could have caught it. Hasn’t played CF since Sept. 13.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Heck of an effort by Andre Ethier, but the #Cardinals tie it on an RBI double by Carlos Beltran. #Dodgers
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Why does that happen so often? Pitcher is perfect through 2 2/3, then gives up a hit to the other pitcher.
— Anthony Jackson (@dodgerscribe) October 12, 2013
Merry Go Round! Juan Uribe lines a base hit scoring two. #Dodgers lead 2-0.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Juan Uribe two-RBI single. #Dodgers 2, #Cardinals 0
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
#Cardinals get Shelby Miller up in pen.
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) October 12, 2013
Based loaded for Yasiel Puig. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Carl Crawford moving too fast for his own feet, ends up at 2nd base on the rope to left. Mark Ellis advances him to 3rd, one out. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
#Cardinals have gone 6 up, 6 down so far against Greinke. Stat of the day: They hit .184 in the NLDS vs. pitchers not named A.J. Burnett
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) October 12, 2013
Hanley Ramirez makes his way back out to short. #Dodgers
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
That is Ethier’s first hit since Sept. 13. #Dodgers #Cardinals
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
Good to see Ethier back
— LasordasLair (@LasordasLair) October 12, 2013
Sounds like Hanley has retreated to the clubhouse with the trainer. (h/t @danielbrim)
— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) October 12, 2013
Zack Greinke makes quick work of the Red Birds — a 1-2-3 first inning. No score at the end of an inning. #ITFDB
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
Gonzalez, Puig whiff. #Dodgers leave two RISP in the first inning. The book on Joe Kelly is accurate: He bears down with runners on.
— J.P. Hoornstra (@jphoornstra) October 12, 2013
The slider is not Yasiel Puig’s friend.
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) October 12, 2013
Batter Up! It’s time for Dodger baseball! #ITFDB
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 12, 2013
