2018 Dodgers Player Reviews: John Axford

John Axford was brought to Los Angeles via trade in July from the Toronto Blue Jays, in exchange for minor league pitcher Corey Copping.

Regular Season Recap

An NL saves leader and Rolaids Relief Man Award winner in 2011, Axford was expected to be a reliable veteran boost for a beleaguered bullpen. To put it really nicely, he was anything but. He pitched a whopping five games in a Dodger uniform, with more earned runs (7) than innings pitched (3.2). That equates to a 17.18 ERA. You read that correctly. He also missed a stretch due to a leg injury in August, during a time when much of the bullpen (chiefly Jansen) was injured.

How’d He Do in October?

What Lies Ahead

Axford is currently a free agent, and with the addition of Joe Kelly to the bullpen, and the return of other in-house options, it’s safe to say he won’t be back in Los Angeles in 2019.
