Beekeeper Who Saved Dodgers-Diamondbacks Game in Phoenix Gets His Own Topps Baseball Card

An unexpected hero came through in Arizona on Tuesday night. With the Los Angeles Dodgers-Arizona Diamondbacks game delayed due to thousands of bees swarming the net behind home plate, the Diamondbacks called beekeeper Matt Hilton to come save the day.

Hilton, who was 45 minutes away from Chase Field watching his son’s T-ball game, arrived at the stadium, put on his beekeeper suit, and sprayed the beehive before drawing them into containers. He reportedly was able to take care of all the bees with a non-pesticidal solution that allowed them to get released outside of the stadium safely.

Hilton was celebrated for his efforts with gigantic applause at Chase Field as he cleared the bees for the game to continue. He then threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game while wearing his beekeeping suit.

The praise and celebration for Hilton is only continuing after his game-saving efforts. Less than 24 hours after Hilton cleared the bees, Topps announced they were immortalizing Hilton’s heroism by making a baseball card of him.

“We’ve signed a deal with Matt Hilton (the Bee Specialist from last night’s game) and we’re making autograph cards from his all-time great performance,” Topps said on X.

This card will look a bit different than many other baseball cards. The card features the pattern of a beehive on the border, along with the now-iconic photo of Hilton holding his arms up in the air to take in the roar of the crowd. The card features Hilton’s signature, as well as several puns including “Bee afraid, bee very afraid.”
