The Blue Jays had started veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman in Game 1 of the American League Division Series and Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. However, Yesavage is getting the ball to start the World Series, facing off against Dodgers ace Blake Snell.

Yesavage has had a whirlwind season after being drafted in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He started the year at Single-A and pitched at High-A, Double-A and Triple-A before rapidly rising to the big leagues.

He will have now pitched in the ALDS, ALCS and started Game 1 of the World Series in his rookie season.

Yesavage made three starts at the MLB level this regular season, allowing five earned runs across 14 innings for a 3.21 ERA with 16 strikeouts.

In ALDS Game 2, he pitched 5.1 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in against the New York Yankees.

He then made two appearances in the ALCS — allowing five runs across four innings in Game 2 and two runs across 5.2 innings in Game 6.

Overall, he has a 4.20 ERA with 22 strikeouts across 15 innings this postseason for the Blue Jays.

Gausman, on the other hand, is a 13-year veteran and two-time All-Star, most recently in 2023. He made 32 starts this regular season, sporting a 3.59 ERA with 189 strikeouts across 193 innings. He’s pitched four times this postseason, most recently one inning in relief in ALCS Game 7 on Monday. That likely factored into the decision to push him back one day.

Overall, across Gausman’s four appearances this postseason, he’s pitched 18 innings, allowing just four earned runs for a 2.00 ERA. He’ll presumably start Game 2 against Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers.

  1. Hope the Dodgers have tape on Yesavage, just so they will know his tendencies and help some of our batters who could be considered free swingers to not be suckered into swinging at bad pitches. You can never have to much intel on your opponent in the World Series…
