Blue Jays Claim Former Dodgers Pitcher After He’s Cut By Marlins

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed former Dodgers relief pitcher Brett de Geus off waivers on Thursday. He was optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons the same day, according to Andrew Stoeten, who reported the news via X.

The Miami Marlins designated de Geus for assignment on Tuesday to make room for former Dodgers right-handed pitcher Michael Peterson. The move came shortly after the Marlins optioned him to the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The right-hander’s stint with the Marlins was brief. Miami initially claimed the right-hander off waivers on Aug. 5 from the Seattle Mariners, keeping him in their organization for slightly more than a month.

He made seven MLB appearances with the Marlins. Across those appearances, he logged a 6.35 ERA while allowing seven hits and five runs across 5.2 innings. De Geus’ last MLB game with the Marlins was on Aug. 24. He only threw eight pitches but was able to get the final out to secure the Marlins’ 7-3 victory over the Diamondbacks.

The Pleasanton, California native had not appeared in a major league game since 2021. He split that season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers. In the 2021 season, he accrued an unsightly 7.56 ERA. He remained in the Diamondbacks’ farm system until 2023, spending most of his time at the Double-A level.

De Geus’ professional baseball career began when the Dodgers drafted him as the No. 1,000 overall pick in the 33rd round of the 2017 MLB draft. He spent four seasons with the Los Angeles organization before the Rangers claimed him in the 2020 Rule 5 draft.

The Dodgers never called De Geus up to the Major Leagues. But he was invited to spring training as a non-roster player in 2020 and reached as high as Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Now, de Geus has found himself back in Triple-A with an opportunity to develop into a full-time big leaguer for the Blue Jays.
