Blue Jays to Be Without All-Star Pitcher for World Series vs Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be facing a Toronto Blue Jays team that will be without All-Star right-hander Jose Berrios for the World Series after he was placed on the injured list for the first time in his 10-year MLB career towards the end of September.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed that Berrios has resumed throwing, but he will not return for the Fall Classic.

Berrios made 30 starts this season before he was moved to the bullpen, a move that he was openly unhappy discussing. Through those starts, Berrios totaled a 4.06 ERA, going 9-5 in that span. Now, his season has been shut down.

Some of the pitchers that the Dodgers will be seeing in the Fall Classic include right-hander Kevin Gausman, right-hander Trey Yesavage, and right-hander Chris Bassitt, among others.

Gausman (a former Dodgers sixth-round draft pick) has totaled a 2.00 ERA across 18 innings this postseason. Yesavage has as many postseason starts as career regular season starts with three, headlined by his 11-strikeout performance in 5.1 hitless frames against the New York Yankees during Game 2 of the ALDS.

Bassitt, who was placed on the injured list towards the end of September, was activated earlier this month and has been perfect through 2.2 relief innings of work in the postseason, allowing just a sacrifice fly on a run not charged to him.

Over the course of the 2025 campaign, the Dodgers have a collective slash line of .252/.329/.442 with a .770 OPS against right-handed starting pitchers. It is only marginally better than that of left-handed starters, but the Dodgers have faced a right-handed starter 115 times during the regular season.

While the Dodgers look to become baseball’s first back-to-back champions in a quarter-century and win their third title in the last six years, the Blue Jays will be searching for their first World Series win since 1993, their second in a row at that point.

  1. Who cares? The Jays didn’t need him to beat Seattle and a 4.06 era is not that great anyway, so I doubt Toronto really cares, either.

    1. They may not have had him against the Mariners, but the Blue Jays’ postseason ERA of 4.36 is higher than any team who made their respective LCS. Hopefully the Dodgers can take advantage early and get some more away wins on the board.
