Bobby Miller is Ready for Primetime in Sunday Night Showdown vs Yankees, Says Roberts

Dodgers rookie RHP Bobby Miller has gotten off to an electric start in his MLB career.

Through two starts, Miller has gone 11 innings and has allowed just two runs while striking out nine. He’s shown the makings of a future star in this league, and made his impressive MLB debut against a strong Braves lineup in Atlanta.

Miller’s next test will be coming on Sunday night, when he starts on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN against the New York Yankees. The moment can’t really get any bigger than that, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts knows Miller can handle it.

“I think there’s certain ideal spots for guys,” Roberts said. “Maybe (Sunday is) not as ideal for a guy who’s making his third start, but it’s where we’re at and we feel confident that (Miller) can handle it. I just look at it as an opportunity to pitch against a great ball club, a great franchise, here at home.”

The Dodgers easily could have shuffled their rotation around to get someone else making this primetime Sunday Night Baseball start, but that just shows how much confidence they have in their rookie pitcher.

The Dodgers have high hopes for Miller, and there’s no reason for them to hold him back from the biggest of moments right now.

Miller already dominated a Braves lineup on the road, and looked sharp against the Washington Nationals at home. Now, when the lights are brightest, he’ll get the ball in a playoff-like atmosphere against the Yankees with the whole country watching.

The nerves may definitely be there for Miller on Sunday, but he’ll have to channel his emotions as best as he can. Fortunately, he recently told Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times that he’s been much better at that since getting to the big leagues.

“I’ve gotten a lot better [at harnessing my emotions],” Miller said. “A few years ago, I don’t think I was that great at it. That was probably my biggest problem, and it was not going to let me go far in my career if I kept acting like that. So I was just trying to stay calm out there, focus on my breathing, and everything will be OK.”

The moment can’t get any bigger in a regular season game in June, so it’ll be interesting to see how Miller fares in this atmosphere. If he has another strong game against the Yankees, he’ll have passed all the early tests, making it clear that he deserves to be in the Major Leagues for an extended period of time.
