Could the Dodgers be More Aggressive in Signing Mookie Betts Long Term?

With the recent agreement that MLB and the MLBPA came to, big league players will in fact gain major league service time in 2020… regardless if baseball is played or not. As such, players all over will be set to hit free agency after what would have been the regular season without even strapping on their cleats.

Of course, the Dodgers are one team that could really be hit hard in a doomsday scenario. Offseason trade acquisition Mookie Betts could walk without ever even playing a game in Dodger blue… so maybe Los Angeles should look into being a little more aggressive and sign him long term?

With all the talk questioning Mookie’s loyalty to LA, the Dodgers do need to consider more than just we need to re-sign this guy at all costs. There are young players — Cody Bellinger, Walker Buehler at least — that are going to start getting expensive before we know it.

So should the Dodgers make a serious run at inking Betts long term? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. He was wanting really big money from Boston for a long term deal, but he might be worth it. Throw in the short season (or no season) and it might make sense. He is one of a handful of the greatest active players.

      1. Maybe I should’ve thought in 1962, “Hey, I better not get behind this team. They might get caught up in a cheating scandal 55 years from now.”

      2. Huge mistake trading for this cheater, dodger mgmt doesn’t have pride along with a lot of bandwagon fans. They should suspend all cheaters period.Mookie can go back to east coast Dodgers did fine before him not their fault they got cheated in 2 world series.

        1. Also Duggie has a stronger arm than mookie.Friedman will be the joke of mgmt loosing Duggie for an over the hill pitcher who will only hurt the dodgers.cause Mookie will fly out of town without playing for dodgers. There won’t be baseball this year you can take that to the bank!

    1. Good point.. In dollars verse production, Manny like Strawberry was a disappointment..

  2. There is only one thing too do long term contract,ke not a one n done deal long term was the plan in the first place just do the right thing and do the long term deal now getted over with,a mookie type of player dont grow on trees now we do got funds and it shouldn’t be a problem there sign him now

  3. I tend to disagree with the need/pressure of signing Mookie Betts to a long, hugely expensive contract.. Sure, I nor anyone that follow baseball could question his ability to produce both offensively and defensively, but lets not throw-to-the-wind, Roberts unique gift of rotating players out of Dodgers farm system that could compensate for whatever additional runs Betts would produce.. That and the fact, the Dodgers don’t have a shortage of potential gloves that could do the job if given the chance.. As the great Vin Scully often said, “you can’t play if you don’t play..

    1. Mookie will struggle in national league especially if he plays in Dodger stadium, his numbers would be like 275 to 280 average 17 or 18 hrs 70 to 75 rbis. Not worth 10 million forget about 30+ million a year while Verdugo will do better than those numbers after already getting enough experience with Dodgers.Duggie will be a Nomar type of hitter just watch.

  4. Hard to imagine him signing unless the Dodgers throw stupid money at him, which they aren’t likely to do. But is he worth more money than anyone not named Trout? Could be. And I can imagine that all the folks that say he’s not worth it would be singing an entirely different tune at the end of the season if it he hit .433 and led the Dodgers to a 4-2 series win over the Astros. Then they would think no amount would be too much. It’s all a matter of perspective.

  5. You guys all crack me up. You say dodgers need this they need that. Then they get one of the best baseball players top 5 easily. And you bitch about them giving away doogie as he is a better player. He’s good but who knows. Sign Betts to a 5 year contract 150 mill. He is going to change the way dodgers play the game. You don’t need him to hit 30 home runs you need this guy to lead off and get on base for the big bats steal bases it’s your lead off hitter they’ve needed for years. Bellinger mad max will hit the home runs. He will balance this lineup and make the dodgers a better team
