Could the Dodgers Still Land Tarik Skubal Without Tyler Glasnow Included in Trade Package?

Despite the rumblings that Tyler Glasnow could be headed to the Detroit Tigers in a deal for ace pitcher Tarik Skubal, the 6-foot-8 right-hander put those rumors to bed.

Even more intriguing, Glasnow hopes that the team does trade for Skubal in order to play alongside him.

There’s not a huge need for the Dodgers to go out and acquire more starting pitching given the depth Los Angeles possesses. However, it’s the Dodgers — and if an elite player is being made available, there’s a high likelihood the team will check in and assess what level of feasibility exists in potentially adding them to an already ridiculously talented core.

With Glasnow seemingly off the table, is there a pathway to get Skubal? Detroit surely will want to be competitive evidenced by their recent signings of veteran relievers in Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan.

A framework for a Skubal-to-LA deal will have to include two major components:

Big League-Ready Talent

Detroit will not accept a package that doesn’t include players ready to help the Tigers immediately. They were a whisker away from being in the ALCS last season, and look like the odds-on favorite to win the AL Central in 2026.

Emmet Sheehan most certainly would have to go the other way. He’d be a major win for the Tigers as a young, super talented, team-controllable asset that would instantly be plugged into the starting rotation. If Detroit insists on further pitching that is able to contribute from the jump, a couple of names from a grouping of River Ryan, Gavin Stone, Justin Wrobleski, and Ben Casparius could be sent the other way.

From a position-player standpoint, Alex Freeland and Dalton Rushing likely would both offer some real value as possible trade chips.

Minor League Prospects

Additional assets will surely come from the loaded Dodgers farm system. With the team having a heavy concentration of outfields atop the rankings list, one of those prospects — likely one of Mike Sirota or Zyhir Hope — would head to the Motor City. Jackson Ferris is the team’s most promising pitching prospect at this given time.

There’s also a plethora of high-upside players littered throughout the farm system that could have some real appeal depending on what Detroit wants to enhance. Speedster Kendall George, infielder Chase Harlan, former first-round pick Kellon Lindsey, and recent acquisition James Tibbs II all could be options.

  1. No trade should occur unless the Dodgers can get Skubal to sign an extension with the Tigers. The Dodgers should not and can not give Detroit a haul of prospects with no expectation of a some years of service wth the Dodgers, not just one year. Offer Rushing(blocked) Hope (Strikes out too much), Bobby Miller (Needs a new start), River Ryan (no place to play with the Dodgers) and Ben Casparius(Who as seemed to fall out of favor). Both would be great in a future Dodger Rotation but when will that ever occur. Plus LA still has Sheehan. Gavin Stone and Justin Wrobleski to find time for. This is not a slam dunk transaction. The Dodgers would be foolish to give up so much young but blocked or not quite ready for the Dodgers talent for a rental…

  2. It would be great to have Skubal, especially as a starter in the post season. It is a given that the Dodgers won’t make such a trade without getting Skubal to sign an extension or entirely new contract. It is reasonable to give up some combination of players who are blocked or who won’t likely play an important role, which incudes River Ryan, Gavin Stone, Wrobleski, Casperious, Bobby Miller, and and anyone below AA and really some (but not too many) of the 6 or 7 players who are on “the various top 100 prospect” lists But the Tigers will want players to help them win their division and succeed in the playoffs this year. Other than Sheehan and, Pages, who is there to send to Detroit to help Detroit win this year? Both Sheehan and Pages would be missed although Skubal would more than take Sheehan’s place. And the Dodgers are already down one outfielder so losing Page would hurt. So how would such a trade work? Who will fulfill Detroit’s needs for players to help them this year? Maybe sign Skubal as a free agent next year. Detroit is not immune from doing what the Angels did with Ohtani, keep him in his walk year, hope to sign him, lose him, get nothing.

  3. I don’t really understand how Glasnow would fit into any trade between these teams. Would the Tigers be willing to pay an injury prone player over 30 million a year, doesn’t seem likely. Would the Dodgers pay a large portion of his salary and include prime young affordable talent, doesn’t make sense to me. Would the Tigers accept Glasnow, money to pay him, and less talented prospects?
