Dave Roberts Admits Dodgers Pitching is ‘Not the Staff We Thought We’d Have’

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a brutal year in terms of pitching injuries.

This past offseason was spent making reinforcements to the roster to ensure that last year’s pitching woes were behind them, but the ailments have quickly returned in 2025, with already 14 pitchers on the injured list. The collection of Cy Youngs and All-Stars currently shelved is far from the vision that manager Dave Roberts saw during spring training.

“It’s not the staff we thought we’d have this season,” Roberts said. “But I feel that what we still do, and have done in the past with injuries, we’re not doing. And I say that in the sense of getting ahead of hitters and keeping them in the ballpark.

“Obviously, we’re banged up a little bit on the pitching side of things. I think the offense is going well, but with that, we still got to make sure our defense is tight enough to give the pitchers the best chance to have success when they do get that opportunity.”

As for the position players, they have been dealing with their own injuries, which has called for constant shuffling of the lineup. Most recently, Hyeseong Kim lost a fly ball in the first inning of Monday evening’s eventual loss during his first MLB start in center field.

The Dodgers rank third in the majors with 18 errors committed. This can’t fully be put on the defense as L.A.’s total ERA is the ninth-highest in baseball with a 4.28 mark — but after four losses in a row and losing six of the last 10 games before Tuesday night, the frustration has been growing stronger.

Patience is the name of the game moving forward, as the Dodgers will do what they can to hold on until their pitchers are at full strength.

    1. You got that doubly right. What’s the annual salary wasted on these guys? Very disappointing.

  1. Things are just bad with this team. The 4 game home losing streak included 3 in a row to the awful Angels team who ranks 25th or worse in every major defensive stat out there. Offensively, they are only in the top 10 in HRs, 3rd (behind LAD 81 and NYY 83). LAD is actually tied for second with fewest errors at 18 with Rangers and Phillies, one behind the Cardinals with 17.

I realize it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but not including their 8 wins to start the season, they’re a meager 23-19 in the other 42 games in their first 50 games played. +62 run differential through 50, but were +22 for those first 8 or nearly 3 runs a game better. Last 42? +40 so less than 1 RPG better than opponents.

Just a different view than focusing on the huge disappointment so far with Glasnow for now the second straight year here and new to team Snell. Who knows if Kershaw will right the ship, but they’re pushing for him to get to the 3k SO club, so he needs another 30. How painful will it be if the first game is any indication? With the mediocrity of other signings, as mentioned like Yates and Scott, It’s not just injuries but poor management judgment plays at least a part. Like not signing Buehler to the QO.
