Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw was activated off the injured list Saturday, ahead of his season debut against the Los Angeles Angels.

In a corresponding roster move, the Dodgers optioned right-handed pitcher Ryan Loutos and placed left-hander Blake Snell on the 60-day IL.

Earlier this week, Snell began a throwing program and played catch from 60 feet. While there was no timetable given for his return, it appeared the two-time Cy Young winner was trending in the right direction.

“It’s very encouraging,” manager Dave Roberts said of Snell’s recent progress.

Nevertheless, the Dodgers latest move indicates Snell is not close to returning to the rotation. While the southpaw’s absence is not ideal, another lefty is set to make his long-awaited return.

Kershaw underwent two offseason surgeries to repair his left meniscus and bone spurs in his left toe. The three-time Cy Young winner began the season on the IL, but made five starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City sporting a 2.57 ERA, 16 strikeouts and five walks while allowing 12 hits, six runs and three home runs across 21 innings.

Saturday’s start marks Kershaw’s first since Aug. 30, 2024 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The left-hander pitched just one inning before going on the IL with a toe injury that kept him sidelined throughout the postseason.

  1. Well, we saw playoff Clayton last night. Lose first 2 at home to the Angels, who now get to go for the sweep in Dodgers Stadium? Sigh. Get him his 3k SOs so we can be done with this. Love what the guy has meant to the team for his entire career, but really?

    1. Sad to say that I agree with you. We all love what Kersh has meant to the team and baseball in general, and have endured a lot of painful losses in key games with him on the mound but it’s time to face reality. He sure looked old on the mound yesterday and it was almost painful to watch him. I wonder when he’ll join his pal Barnsey?
