Dodgers Activate Kirby Yates, Place LA Star on Paternity List

The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated right-handed reliever Kirby Yates from the injured list.

In a corresponding move, southpaw Blake Snell has been placed on the paternity list. Snell left immediately after the conclusion of Friday’s loss to the San Diego Padres to be with his wife, who was expected to go into labor soon.

Yates first made his way to the injured list in a Dodgers uniform in the middle of May with a right hamstring strain. His most recent stint on the IL was to address lower back pain, keeping him out since July 26.

The 38-year-old right hander is working with a 4.31 ERA across 31.1 innings this season, which has been a far cry from his 1.17 ERA 2024 campaign with the Texas Rangers that earned him an All-Star honor and an eighth-place Cy Young award finish.

In Yates’ first 10 games since returning from his mid-May IL stint, the right-hander showed signs of life with a 2.35 ERA in that span, but in his seven most recent outings before being shelved once again, his ERA was an abysmal 7.20 in those five innings.

The veteran reliever from Hawai’i returns to a pitching roster that is in need of more depth, and could not have picked a better time to be activated.

After dropping the series opener to the San Diego Padres on Friday night, the Dodgers are tied for first place with the Friars in the NL West. Despite Snell looking more and more like his old self by the start, the Dodgers weren’t able to supply more than three hits over the course of the evening.

Speaking of Snell, the MLB paternity list allows a player to be away from their team for up to three days to be with their family and the ability to recall a replacement on the 40-man roster.

Snell has been electric since his return from a four-months long absence. In his last four starts, the southpaw has a 1.96 ERA with 26 strikeouts to seven walks.
