Dodgers: An Update on Joe Kelly’s Suspension Appeal

It has now been one week since the Dodgers’ Joe Kelly kicked off the Astros incident. And it has been almost one week since Kelly was handed a hefty suspension by Major League Baseball for that.

MLB generally likes to get appeals taken care of quickly, but that has not been the case here. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts spoke to media on Tuesday and talked about the appeal. He has not received an answer from the league, but it is expected this week.

The 8-game suspensions would come out to 22 games in a regular season, a record for such an incident. It’s understandable that the Dodgers would feel this was far too much, and that Kelly would opt to appeal.

With rosters set to trim down to 28 on Thursday, the Dodgers could choose to use Kelly often this week. Getting him into as many games as possible before he is forced to rest might be ideal at this point for the bullpen. Kelly has now pitched in 3 games since the incident.

The Dodgers will play two more games in San Diego before heading home to Los Angeles. They start a 7-game homestand on Friday.

  1. Roberts is overusing the pen. It’s a talented pen, but if you trot the fellas out every night for 4-5 innings, they’re going to start leaking. Need longer starts from our first line. Buehler = please be smarter and pitch angrier. Take the fight to the opponent. Kershaw = keep throwing darts. Strip: Best starter on the staff right now. Oorius: throw more strikes. May/Gonsolin: Gonsolin is actually better. Wood: bullpen or trade him back to the Braves.

    1. Dodgers have at least 18 legit relievers to call upon from its 60-player pool, so no need to be concerned. And starters will soon go deeper into games; 60 games is a sprint, so all hands on deck.

      1. Yes it’s a sprint so they should be unleashed already instead they are still messing around like they always do. Barnes needs to ride the pine and the starters need to go 6-7 innings starting immediately

  2. Frankly, 8 games suspension is ridiculous! At most it should be a game or two! Is Rob Manfred on the Astros payroll?

  3. didn’t hit a player and if you watch he is walking off the field and than reacts to something correa says so obviously their should be no suspension If you suspend kelly you should suspend correa for saying something to get a reaction fact is he was walking off the field, he obviously turned it up by calling him out but he walks off first so the person bringing everyone onto the field is Correa first.

  4. The Astros media and fans have constantly shown support for their cheating team by implying what they did is okay because “everyone cheats”, citing the Yankees, Red Sox investigations at every opportunity. But this week, after the Kelly thing, they have a new target. Now they are alleging Orel Hershiser was cheated throughout his career, citing some allegations made by Preston Wilson. I have no idea how they felt the need to trot out this accusation but it appears they will do anything at this point to find companions to float with them on their cheating yacht.

  5. Wow. I wonder how many games Bumgarner will get due to hitting THREE batters in his game against the ASStros, including one hitter TWICE! From ruling like they did with Joe Kelly, he should get 20 games (or 54 in a 162 game season). Oh, but he HIT those batters, and didn’t just get close like Kelly did. Okay, so he gets off free.

Is Bumgarner Manfred’s SPECIAL friend? He is a former Giant, who are enemies of the Dodgers, as Manfred clearly is, so he doesn’t get a punishment, just like anyone else who is against the Dodgers, who are Manfred’s most hated team.

Get Manfred out of baseball forever!! Effective YESTERDAY!!!

    1. Bums HBP were more like knicks and he got shelled there was no intimidation there. Opponents need to be better like Kelly
