Dodgers’ Bobby Miller Reveals Whether He Wants to Be Starter or Reliever Long-Term

A sophomore slump tainted starting pitcher Bobby Miller’s 2024 season after a promising rookie season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023.

Miller has spent the most of 2025 in Triple-A working through his issues on the mound. He earned two call-ups to MLB this season but severely struggled in both outings, giving up seven earned runs, 11 hits and two home runs through five combined innings.

Miller told Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain he believes the adversity he is facing will ultimately help him as a starter in the long run.

“I’d like to think that what I am going through right now could help me long-term as a starter if the Dodgers were welcoming that to me,” Miller said.

But in his second call-up in May, the Dodgers utilized Miller in the bullpen for the first time in his MLB career.

Although Miller expressed he wants to remain a starting pitcher, he is open to any pitching role in MLB. The 26-year-old is eager to help Los Angeles continue to be a dominant organization, regardless of the role the Dodgers assign him.

“At the end of the day, in this organization, you just got to do whatever helps the team win. And whether that’s being a bullpen reliever or a starter or whatever role. I take whatever role I can get with this team,” Miller said. “Great organization, you always got a chance to win every year and you just want to be a part of it and be with the guys and just do whatever you can to help the team win, no matter what role that is.”

Miller has not pitched for the Dodgers since May 25 against the New York Mets.

In Triple-A, the right-hander has posted a 5.19 ERA and 62 strikeouts. He has started in 14 games for Oklahoma City, but has also begun throwing out of the bullpen in the minor leagues.

Since transitioning to regular reliever at the end of July, Miller has thrown six scoreless and hitless innings in Triple-A.

“I think to myself like what I’m doing right now is like, ‘Why couldn’t I do this for six straight innings like I did a few years ago?’” Just stay in attack mode, get strike one, eliminate these walks,” Miller said.

If he can keep this trend going, Miller could eventually be a strong addition to the Dodgers’ bullpen.

    1. Not sure how much value he has at this point. Think the Dodgers have to hope he can turn things around

      1. We’ve given him numerous chances to pitch well, but he has failed. Plus, he has a really bad attitude when things don’t go his way.

  1. Miller will never be a reliable starter for ANYONE until he gets over the concept of failure. He can’t focus on every little thing like it is life or death. He just needs to calm down and take it pitch by pitch. I think being a high leverage reliver is exactly what he needs right now. If he can face his demons doing that, and be successful, then he may have a chance to be a starter again. At least that is how I see it and I have worked many young players with this issue and many were successful later. Not all, but most…
