Dodgers’ Brock Stewart Suddenly ‘Unlikely’ to Return in Regular Season

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that while relief pitcher Brock Stewart still has a chance to return before the regular season, it seems unlikely.

Stewart threw a bullpen on Wednesday, but is still feeling some residual soreness. The right-hander has been on the injured list since Aug. 12 with right shoulder inflammation.

“He’s pitchable,” Roberts said Wednesday. “I think tomorrow will be a light catch day. He wants to be a part of things and he’s doing everything he can. We’ve just got to be mindful of the health, the performance part of it. So it’s day-to-day.”

The Dodgers acquired Stewart at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins, shipping out outfielder James Outman. He had a 2.38 ERA with the Twins this season before arriving in LA at the end of July. He made just four appearances for the Dodgers after arriving, posting a 4.91 ERA before going on IL.

The 33-year-old reliever began his MLB career with the Dodgers in 2016, and stayed with the organization until the Toronto Blue Jays claimed him off waivers in 2019. After a brief stint in an independent league, Stewart returned to the Dodgers organization, but spent most of his time on the injured list. After his time with the Dodgers in the minors, he signed with the Twins in 2022.

Stewart, despite his struggles for the Dodgers thus far, would be a nice addition to a struggling Dodgers bullpen. A late inning collapse cost the Dodgers their opening game of their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, and they nearly fell apart again Wednesday in an 11-inning contest.

    1. They didn’t give up much for Stewart, so it’s not that bad. That being said I’d definitely like to see more out of him when he comes back.

    2. One could argue it already is a failure given Stewart has already missed a majority of the season since his arrival at the deadline.

      1. Did the Dodgers have the guy checked out by their doctors before the trade? Sounds like the guy was hiding an injury? Was an MRI taken of his shoulder? Watch over the winter he will have an operation and be out for 2026.

    3. I think it’ll be a success considering Brock Stewart has multiple years of team control and James Outman was never going to turn into anything in LA. For this season, though, not much help…

  1. I’d like to know in detail how Minnesota was using and having success with Stewart (a career year as it were) compared to what the Dodgers did different when Stewart showed up. How can changing teams all of sudden affect a pitcher’s health. I personally believe it is too much emphasis on “spin rate” which is hard on shoulders and elbows. It just makes no sense that a guy can be rolling along and all of sudden a chance of venue puts him on the IL. Somebody give us an answer to this vital question…

    1. Far too many injuries in the bullpen this year. Hopefully he can come back and stay healthy throughout the postseason.
