Gervase joined the Dodgers in Colorado on Tuesday as part of the taxi squad. One day later, he officially gets called up to make his Dodgers debut.

Who is Paul Gervase?

Gervase, 25, was acquired by the Dodgers at the trade deadline in a three-team deal with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds.

The 6-foot-10 reliever made four appearances with the Rays this season, sporting a 4.26 ERA across 6.1 innings.

Gervase has had a strong season in Triple-A this year, sporting a 2.94 ERA across 33 appearances with both the Dodgers and Rays organizations. Since the deadline, Gervase made five appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, sporting a 2.08 ERA across 8.2 innings.

Why Did the Dodgers Send Down Alexis Diaz?

As for the corresponding move, Diaz has struggled for the Dodgers at the MLB level this season.

LA acquired the former All-Star reliever from the Reds earlier this season after he was optioned to the minor leagues with a 12.00 ERA across six big league games.

Since being recalled by the Dodgers, Diaz has made nine appearances, sporting a 5.00 ERA across nine innings with nine strikeouts.

Diaz was an All-Star in 2023 with Cincinnati, when he had a 3.07 ERA across 67.1 innings. He was even better during his rookie season in 2022, finishing with a 1.84 ERA across 63.2 innings.

The Dodgers were hoping to get Diaz back to his All-Star form, but it hasn’t immediately translated. Now, he’ll head back to the minor leagues for more seasoning.
