Dodgers Calling Up Starting Pitcher for Sunday’s Series Finale vs Astros

The Los Angeles Dodgers will call up right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan for Sunday’s series finale against the Houston Astros, per manager Dave Roberts.

Sheehan was shockingly optioned just a day after making his first MLB start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. However, he will be returning to big leagues this weekend as the Dodgers’ starting pitcher for Sunday’s contest.

Sheehan allowed one earned run on three hits across four innings of work against the San Diego Padres earlier this month. It was an impressive performance from the 25-year-old, who had six strikeouts and issued no walks in his return to MLB.

Despite Sheehan’s strong 2025 debut, the Dodgers optioned the right-hander to Triple-A Oklahoma City the day after he made his start.

Roberts acknowledged the right-hander deserves to be in the Dodgers’ rotation long term, despite the team’s decision to send him back down to the minors temporarily.

“I think that he dominated the rehab program,” Roberts said. “He is much more physical than he used to be. I think he’s just got such a good head, a calmness about him. I think he dominated the glove-side command and the changeup off of it, the breaking ball. So I’m not surprised in the least.”

It appears Sheehan could be a mainstay in the rotation with his return to the big leagues Sunday.

  1. He should have stayed with the team after the start. Instead, they keep Wrobleski on the roster. Please stop with the 2 inning BS with Ohtani. They would have won the Saturday game against the cheaters if they would just let Shohei pitch instead of putting these minor league garbage pitchers on the mound. So sick of this stupid crap. And it is about time Snell and Glasnow start earning all the millions they are being paid.

    1. I agree, and Robert’s has to stop putting make-shift lineups with platoon players. Muncie is hurt. Play Edmond and Kim consistently and bring up AAA infielder with Muncie out. Put Mookie back in right. He’s do8ng fine defensively at shortstop this year, but it’s not natural for him and it’s affecting his hitting. Put Teo in left, Pages in center, Mookie in right. Edmond at shortstop, Kim at second, AAA player at third, or Smith at third and Rushing at catcher to give Smith areas but keep him in the lineup.

    2. Snell and Glasnow have been a huge disappointment. Teo and Betts need to step up their games.

    3. I understand the frustration, especially against the Astr*s, but you do understand that normally a pitcher returning from TJ surgery, his second in Shohei’s case, would have several rehab starts in the minors to build them up. You really want to see the Dodgers send Shohei down to Triple A for a month and lose his bat? I don’t. They also could have won the game with timely hits – more along their usual because leaving 9 on base didn’t help. Both teams had 9 hits and the cheaters only left 3 on base.

As far as Snell and Glasnow, personally no one is happy with their lack of contributions and the ignorant huge contracts given to guys to come here and sit on the IL, but that said, bringing them back too early for injury just increases their chances of a short stint and then back to IL.

And please let’s stop trying to control where players want to play. Betts is the one saying he doesn’t want to be in the outfield. We have no way of knowing if that’s what is affecting his hitting. None. In 2021 he batted .264 and in 2022 he batted .269, both while playing right field. Yes, he’s down to .249, a career low for him, but not that far from where he was just a few seasons ago. We say Muncy bounce back in the month prior to his injury, perhaps a resurgence from Mookie, who has hit a HR in 2 of last 3 games, is on the way.

Deep breaths – it’s July and even losing these 2 at home to Houston, and hopefully we win today to avoid the home sweep, we’re still in first place, 8 games up on SF and SD and tied for the best record in MLB. Even with all of the injuries and guys underperforming. The goal is October, not July.

      1. I agree with Mike H. Build Ohtani up slowly, we need him for October, maybe as a closer? As for the offense, more timely hits with runners on and situational hitting would help score runs. The defense also need to be more sound to prevent giving additional outs and stressing the pitcher.

  2. Sheehan already had multiple rehab starts before his start vs San Diego. I said nothing about sending Shohei to AAA. His procedure on the elbow was done nearly 2 years ago. He is fully recovered, and should be in the rotation now, not as a 2 inning sideshow. Please spare me the lame argument that they are playing the long game, because that could end up backfiring in the end. They were fortunate in 2024 that they made it through the playoffs with 3 starters. Games matter regardless of what month they are played in.

    1. I agree with you about Sheehan. 100%. But every pitcher who has ever had TJ surgery, or two (Buehler and Ohtani), don’t come back and start in MLB without a build up in the minors. So the Dodgers are navigating Ohtani’s build up here without sending him to Triple A. So, in reality, that’s the only option if we don’t want to send him down, whether you explicitly said it or not.

And I also agree that games matter whenever they’re played but am in no way saying throw away games. They can, and actually need to, use regular season games to work through some things. I also agree that we were very fortunate to win the World Series last year with only 3 starters. But if your point is that games in July matter as much as in October, well I’ll politely disagree and state that no one gets a trophy in July. Ever. In other words, I’d rather they work through some issues and get it straight now, not in the playoffs if at all possible.
