UPDATE: The Dodgers are designating Austin Barnes for assignment to make room for Rushing.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up top prospect Dalton Rushing, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

Rushing is the team’s No. 1 overall prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and will now get his first opportunity at the MLB level.

It’s currently unclear what the corresponding move will be. Rushing’s main position is catcher, and he’s blocked there with Will Smith and Austin Barnes barring an injury.

The Dodgers have tried Rushing out in left field, though, so it’s possible the team wants to get his bat in the lineup and will do so by putting him in a corner outfield spot. The Dodgers will need to clear a 40-man roster spot for Rushing.

Rushing’s bat is his calling card, as he’s slashing .308/.424/.514 with five home runs, 17 runs batted in and an OPS of .939 this season.

Over the course of his four-year minor league career, he’s hit .277 with an OPS of .931.
