Dodgers Catcher Has Fracture in Left Big Toe: Report

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes has a fracture in his left big toe, according to AM 570-AM.

The Dodgers’ veteran is going on the injured list Monday and Hunter Feduccia is being recalled from Triple-A for the second time this season, as Dodgers Nation reported earlier Monday.

For Barnes, the veteran backup catcher, the injury is not minor. He’s batting .241 with a .318 on-base percentage and .284 slugging percentage as the backup to Will Smith.

According to the initial report from AM-570’s David Vassegh, Barnes knew he had the injury in Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, when he started and caught six shutout innings from Clayton Kershaw in the critical series finale. The Dodgers won the game, 2-1.

Barnes, 34, is a career .221 hitter in parts of 10 major league seasons (2015-24), all with the Dodgers.

Feduccia, 27, got one at-bat in his only previous cup of coffee with the Dodgers, on July 31 against the Seattle Mariners. He is hitting .282/.415/.433 at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, with six home runs and 46 RBIs in 73 games.

The Dodgers are expected to place Barnes on the injured list and formally recall Feduccia prior to the 7:10 p.m. game against the Seattle Mariners.

Tommy Edman, whom the Dodgers acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline, is also expected to be activated from the injured list prior to the game. Since Edman is on the 60-day injured list, the Dodgers will need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move in order to accommodate his return.

The Dodgers acquired Edman as part of a three-team trade with the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals on July 30.

The same is true of Max Muncy, the veteran third baseman who has been sidelined with an oblique injury since May.
