Dodgers Could Trade Top Outfield Prospect in Blockbuster Move This Offseason: Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers have already begun making moves this offseason, shipping off 40-man roster addition Robinson Ortiz to the Seattle Mariners for 22-year-old Tyler Gough.

The move doesn’t quite meet their needs at the MLB level, though, and ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez thinks they could look to trade some of their more valuable prospects to fill in their roster.

“The Dodgers have a glut of highly regarded outfield prospects at the moment, namely Josue De Paula, Eduardo Quintero, Zhyir Hope and Mike Sirota,” Gonzalez wrote. “The Dodgers’ preference is to pluck from that group to address needs through a trade, according to sources. And though they can use them to access the closer they desire, they can also add young, controllable position players, ideally at second base, shortstop or center field.”

De Paula, Hope and Quintero are all 20 years old and make up the top three prospects in the Dodgers’ system, and Sirota is the oldest of the four at 22 and ranks fifth within the organization. All four players rank within the MLB Top 100 prospects.

The Dodgers don’t have an urgent need for a second baseman, shortstop or center fielder, but adding some young players to the fold would set them up for years to come. Andy Pages, Tommy Edman and Mookie Betts currently hold the three positions, however, with Edman and Betts both in their 30s, they could begin preparing this offseason.

Hope and De Paula — the Dodgers’ top two prospects — both moved to Double-A this season, with Hope having a much more productive season at the new level. The duo played just 10 games combined in Double-A, and Hope managed a .771 OPS through six games while recording five RBIs while De Paula didn’t record a hit through four games.

If the Dodgers do ship out one — or several — of their prospects this offseason, they would definitely be able to bring in a bigger name to set up their lineup for the future.

  1. The only one of those I would trade at this point is Hope. He has a huge hole in his swing and strikes out a lot. If he can show improvement in Double A then that would be a good thing, But he swings from the heels and that is a very bad sign of lack of plate discipline. Many are comparing De Paula to Jordan Alvarez and we know how that turned out. He is only an average fielder but he is still young. And that kind of sock cannot be denied. Quintero has been highly ranked by many analysts as has Sirota. Plus there are others like James Tibbs who were high prospects in other organizations, the Red Sox in Tibbs case. Of all these, Hope is the one with the most upside AND downside. The strikeouts are a bad omen of things to come.

    1. Trienen isn’t going anywhere, He was hurt much of late season and had an up and down year. The Dodger Pitching lab expects Trienen to bounce back this year when he is totally healthy. When he is on he is almost unhittable. Everybody deserves a second chance and Trienen will get it…
