The Los Angeles Dodgers split their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and returned home atop the National League West. Meanwhile, another team in the division endured a nightmarish weekend.

The Colorado Rockies faced the San Diego Padres in a three-game series beginning last Friday. On Saturday, the Padres unleashed a beatdown on the last-place Rockies, scoring 21 runs and shutting out the Colorado lineup.

By Sunday, the Rockies defeated San Diego, 9-3, but lost longtime manager Bud Black as team owner Dick Monfort relieved the skipper of his duties.

Manager Dave Roberts, who referred to Black as a good friend and mentor, commented on the shocking firing of the Rockies manager.

“I’m bummed. I’m disappointed. I don’t think Casey Stengel could change the outcome of that ballclub and that’s not the manager’s fault,” Roberts said. “But obviously, they felt they needed a change in voice or direction. But for me, there’s not many people that are better than Buddy Black. So, yeah, that’s very disappointing. It is certainly not his doing.”

The Rockies have the worst record in the big leagues at 7-34, making it the worst start in National League history. The team is on pace to win just 25 games this season.

Black took over the managerial position in Colorado ahead of the 2017 season. The Rockies reached the postseason the first two seasons of Black’s tenure.

Since then, the Rockies have struggled to stay afloat in baseball’s best division.
