Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Provides Update on Blake Snell After Dr. Neal ElAttrache Visit

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell appears to finally be taking steps toward his long-awaited return from the injured list. On Wednesday, Snell began a throwing program and played catch from 60 feet.

“It’s very encouraging,” manager Dave Roberts said.

While there is still no timetable for the two-time Cy Young winner’s return, starting a throwing program indicates the meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache regarding his shoulder injury went well.

Snell has faced several setbacks in his recovery, and the Dodgers have been cautious with the pitcher’s return. The southpaw made just two starts before being placed on the IL on April 6.

The Dodgers began the offseason by signing Snell to a five-year, $182 million deal less than a month after winning the World Series. The landmark contract was an indication the defending champions hoped to continue their success in 2025.

Snell landed on the IL twice last season with the San Francisco Giants, but finished 2024 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.048 WHIP across 20 starts. The left-hander threw the first no-hitter of his career upon his return from the IL, and the hope is Snell is just as effective once he takes the mound for the Dodgers again.

Snell is one of 14 Dodgers pitchers on the IL, the latest being Roki Sasaki. L.A. now has three starters who were in the Opening Day rotation sidelined.

The injury woes to the pitching staff are concerning, to say the least. However, a depleted rotation will be getting reinforcements this weekend as veteran Clayton Kershaw is expected to make his first start of the season Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels.
