Dodgers: Dave Roberts Talks About Walker Buehler and Max Muncy’s NLDS Game One

Currently, Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts is the owner of 24 postseason victories. Therefore after the 6-0 win over the Washington Nationals in game one of the NLDS, he spoke glowingly of his finest contributors.

Of course, no one came up bigger then Walker Buehler and Max Muncy. The pair were a major topic of discussion during Roberts’ postgame press conference which is in the tweet from SportsNet Los Angeles below.

Dave Roberts on Max Muncy’s Big Game One

First, it was brought to attention that the last time the Dodgers faced left-handed pitching in the postseason was in the 2018 World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Then, Max Muncy was coming off the Dodgers’ bench rather than starting. However on Thursday night, he was given the start against Patrick Corbin.

Roberts talks with admonishment towards Muncy’s approach.

“He’s earned it. Obviously I think that ideally you get a guy that the handedness doesn’t matter or effect production. Max has shown that all year long – the consistent approach and bat quality. You have a guy in Corbin who has dominated left-handed hitters all through his career. So for Max to stay in there and take good at-bats and not offer at balls out of the zone, it’s big. Regardless I think the at-bat quality he’s had all year has been unbelievable.”

Notably, the Dodgers did not have a hit off Corbin until Muncy went the other way with a single in the middle innings.

Dave Roberts on Walker Buehler’s Dominating Performance

As you should know, Buehler’s game one performance was historic in more than one way. It’s obvious that Buehler was born for the big spot. Indeed, Roberts thinks this quality shows up in Buehler’s game.

“You don’t know until you see it, and we’ve seen it the last couple years. There are just guys that want those opportunities and want to be the guy. Walker time and time again just knows how to temper and control his emotions and transfer that into the delivery and execution of pitches.”

Then, Roberts paid some credit to Washington; which in-turn was more credit for his winning pitcher.

“That’s a really good lineup over there, and for him to go six? We needed it.”

Finally, it’s obvious that Roberts knows he’s struck postseason gold with Buehler at his disposal every few games. If you can get Walker Buehler to a deciding game, he’s likely to do his thing as his track record has shown.

Also, it’s great to see Muncy playing against tough left-handed starters and filling the stat sheet.

  1. Very proud of both Buehler and Muncy!

I predict that Max will be our MVP in the World Series this year. Now, let’s win today’s game to go up 2-0.
