Dodgers Face Afternoon Deadline in Trevor Bauer Situation
When Trevor Bauer was reinstated by an independent arbitrator who shortened his suspension from 324 games to 194 on December 22, the Dodgers had two weeks to decide whether to put him on their roster or release him. That put the deadline on January 6 which is … today!
What time today? Well, that’s not so clear, but according to L.A. beat writer Juan Toribio, we should expect the decision this afternoon.

MLB is famous for its inconsistency on times. Some deadlines are end of day, others are 5pm Eastern, and something they throw in an afternoon deadline just to keep us on our toes. This particular deadline might be based on the timing of Bauer being officially reinstated two weeks ago, or it might be more MLB weirdness.
Either way, we can expect a decision on Bauer in the next several hours, and no matter what happens, there’s going to be a group of angry fans. It’s a no-win situation for Los Angeles, even though a lot of fans have a lot of strong (opposing) opinions on what the obvious right answer is.
The decision comes today, but the conversation will keep going for a long, long time.

The Dodgers should keep him. They are paying him, let him go to spring training, he can always be cut later. They need pitching. Kershaw is going to pitch in the WBC and he hasn’t completed a full season in 5-6 years without missing a month or two. Does anybody believe he will start 32 games in addition to the WBC. I don’t think so.
Gonsolin and May are wild cards at the moment as is Syndergaard. Only Urias is a sure thing (at least as sure as any in baseball discounting injury). Bring Bauer back and get on with the game.

Not his first offense… that’s the only thing you got correct, because this wasn’t an offense. He has never been put on trial, never charged, therefore being innocent until PROVEN guilty means he has no more guilt of sexual assault than you or I.
we need starting pitching and not just okay pitching. we need Ace pitching, so keeping bauer is a good decision.
Reinstate him. He is a great pitcher. This is about baseball.
I completely agree with you Terri. We definitely need pitching, and we are going to pay him no matter what. So put him to work. In my opinion what a person does not wearing the uniform it’s his private life, and besides he was never found guilty. I can just imagine that if the Dodgers let him go the Giants or Padres are going to be there like hawks and sign up. That of course would be terrible.
take him to spring training to see what you have – he can always be released then if he fails the “chemistry test” — you’re already paying him so take the time and make an intelligent decision based on facts.
Roster him and make a decision to release or keep him on our own timeline. No harm in waiting to spring training is over…allows us more time and better negotiating position re trades and his ability to pitch this season.
These owners didn’t get wealthy enough to own a team worth Billions by throwing away $22 million dollar players (who’s market value is over $30 million this year) for no return, Not to mention he’d probably end up pitching against us on our dime. Somehow, I think these guys are smarter than that!! If they want to stay under the CBT threshold they will build up his value and trade him to a team willing to pay at least part of his salary. This is a business after all.

It doesn’t work like that. If they roster him he is there unless they trade him. They can’t assign him to the minor leagues because he has enough time in the majors to refuse the assignment. If they try to buy themselves any time by moving him to inactive in a certain time period other teams will steam be able to claim him for the league minimum. He would get paid the 22 million by the dodgers plus a league minimum from what ever team picks him up.

Have a team meeting with him and then make a decision. Reminding everybody in that meeting that he is without sin cast the first stone. They’re talking about bringing in that fella from Boston who was with the Sox when they cheated. Granted not as severe but there have been other cases that have been worse . Unfortunately he got up with gold brickin women . Bottom line we need him.
Do the Dodgers really want to pay his salary while he pitches for the Padres or someone else who needs a solid pitcher for free? Give him a warning…zero tolerance for any BS and get him out on the mound!
One should considerate the climate that any team with him will be. it will / would surely not be the easiest with other players, team direction, medias, fans, etc…I can unfortunately already imagine fights in the stands over him being there (or not being there).

So I am still feeling depressed about how last season ended. And of course am also still depressed about our very quiet offseason where SD and many other teams have improved and we have not. I have a feeling that LA will let Bauer walk, and I strongly disagree with that. Let him report to Spring Training and see what happens. We are already paying him.
All good comments on a almost no win situation. Mookie and Kershaw step up as team leaders and tell Bauer he is back with zero tolerance, the rest of the team will follow.

He’s a good pitcher but a complete idiot. He’s always been a distraction with his stupid videos and brand building, and he’ll be more of one now. Reinstate him and then trade him out of the division.

Even with what we know it’s obvious Bauer was set up by this San Diego woman.This woman fabricated her story for a pay day and to get him out of the mix in baseball against her own area team.It got to be whatever it was but judgements are harsh regardless. To say in life a second chance is to be given to any one is really not the issue here.Domestic Violence here really isn’t applicable. In this day and age things get lumped together for the common good and at times this isn’t right. Bauer should be back in the MLB and with the Dodgers.

People who argue that Trevor Bauer was not criminally charged are missing the point.
The point is that Trevor Bauer gets off sexually on punching women in the vagina and choking them until they pass out while having sex. It doesn’t matter if it’s consensual. What matters is that the vast majority of Dodger players, coaches, staff and fans find that behavior to be disgusting, because it is.
Every single person on this thread who is saying the Dodgers should keep him should ask themselves: would you invite a person who likes punching women in the vagina to your home for dinner?
If your answer is “No,” you should then ask why you would cheer for such a person, or want him on your favorite team.

I love and live for sports but these situations I simply don’t get. A player does a very bad thing and is forced one way or the other to leave the current team. After a period of time they sign elsewhere. I don’t get it. I do not like what he may have done but if he plays in the league then bring him back. Especially after all the money spent on him!
They can certainly add him to the 40 man roster today and release him later if they so choose. We are not talking about sending him to the minors if they add him to the roster. After they add him, they can either play him, trade him, or release him. Regardless of whatever they decide to do, they will owe him 100% of his pay, less any money another team might pay him, whether that is the league minimum, or some agreed amount if they are able to trade him and get the other team to pay them some $ to offset what they will owe TB.

There is substance to the accusations that were made. Bauer would NEVER have been suspended for the huge amount of time that he was if there wasn’t. He has never apologized to management, baseball, or fans. He could have done that without admitting guilt. But never has. And one of his first statements—was a lie. Dodger management just swallowed 22 mil. They were in a no win situation with this. Sure, he may get a contract with someone we play frequently. But I am not sure I would sign him right now if I was a general manager. Too much distraction in the dug out. I am proud of our GM for being principled when so many today are not.
