Dodgers Fans Will Fall in Love With Freddie Freeman Even More After Reading About His Painful World Series
Freddie Freeman made multiple sacrifices on his way to becoming the World Series MVP and leading the Dodgers to their eighth championship in franchise history. Right before the postseason started, Freeman sprained his ankle against the San Diego Padres. His ankle sprain normally would have kept him out for at least a month with a spot on the injured list, but Freeman did not want to miss out on helping his team in October.
After the Dodgers won the World Series over the New York Yankees, it was also revealed that Freeman was playing through broken rib cartilage. At one point, Freeman’s dad, Fred Freeman, even told Freddie to stop playing.
“I actually told him to stop,” Fred said, via Jeff Passan of ESPN. “I said, ‘Freddie, this is not worth it. I know you love baseball. I love baseball. But it’s not worth what you’re going through.’ And he looked at me like I was crazy, and he said, ‘Dad, I’m never going to stop.'”
“It only hurts when I miss,” Freddie told Fred. “So I’m just going to have to stop missing.”
Freeman not only played through multiple injuries, but he put on a historic performance. He became the first player to hit a walk-off grand slam during the World Series. He also became the first to hit a home run in six consecutive World Series games. Freeman hit a home run or at least two RBIs in each World Series game, helping the Dodgers win the series
“I gave myself to the game, to the field,” Freeman said, via Passan. “I did everything I could to get onto that field. And that’s why this is really, really sweet. I’m proud of the fact that I gave everything I could to this team and I left it all out there. That’s all I try to do every single night. When I go home and put my head on that pillow, I ask if I gave everything I had that night. And usually it’s a yes. One hundred percent of the time it’s a yes. But this one was a little bit sweeter because I went through a lot. My teammates appreciated it. The organization appreciated it. And to end it with a championship makes all the trying times before games, what I put myself through to get on the field, worth it.”
For his efforts, Freeman earned the World Series MVP award, and his second MLB championship. He also established himself as one of the greatest postseason legends.
