Dodgers: Former LA Farmhand Signs with Rival NL West Club
After spending the 2021 season with the Dodgers’ triple-A affiliate at Oklahoma City, infielder/pitcher Matt Davidson has signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Davidson was with the Dodgers all through spring training last year where he saw time at first base and third base and even spent some time on the mound working on refining his pitching, which was something already on his resume.
The former MLB slugger has hit 52 home runs in part of 5 seasons at the big league level. With AAA OKC in 2021, the 30-year-old put up great numbers, posting a .294/.365/.629 triple slash line with 28 home runs and 81 runs batted in over 84 games.
After injuries hindered him early on, Davidson slashed .317/.393/.700 from June 22 through the end of the season (64 G/280 PA). The .700 SLG was best among all players in the Minors during that period.
He could put up obscene numbers in Reno. https://t.co/MUzPN13kCL

As for why he never got a shot with the Dodgers who often struggled with consistent production off the bench, that might just be a matter of timing and versatility. The veteran has been limited to first base, third base, and designated hitter over his career, all areas LA had quality depth in at the big league level. At least for most of the season.
Davidson now re-joins the team who drafted him as a first round pick back in 2009.
