Dodgers: Gavin Lux Didn’t Know About Famous 1988 Kirk Gibson Home Run

This one is funny. When MVP candidate Cody Bellinger came up as a rookie, it was not long before we discovered that he had never seen or heard of the show Seinfeld. Now, rookie second baseman Gavin Lux is in the news for a similar thing. You be the judge which one is worse: Gavin Lux didn’t know which Hall of Famer Kirk Gibson hit his famous 1988 home run off of.

Of course, Gibby hit the legendary World Series homer off of Oakland A’s closer Dennis Eckersley on a 3-2 backdoor slider. But that was a long time ago.

Lux, 21, was born in 1997, nine years after the famous home run. Being from Kenosha, Wisconsin, he certainly was not a Dodger fan growing up and should not be expected to know the Dodgers’ history in in-depth fashion. However, the Gibson home run is one of the biggest moments in baseball in the past few decades. Everyone should know about it.

While we shouldn’t clown Lux for it, this is hilarious. He’s young, so he should get a pass. But now, he knows the footsteps he needs to follow in.

Gavin Lux hit his first career postseason home run in his first career postseason at-bat on Thursday and looks to provide some heroics of his own en route to a World Series title. At just 21 years old and his bright future with a team poised to contend for quite some time, this will not be his only rodeo.

My name is Daniel Preciado and I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore Sport Analytics major and Cognitive Science and Economics dual minor at Syracuse University. When I am not in New York, I live in Whittier, California --- not too far from Chavez Ravine. I am pretty old-school for being an analytics guy and I will always embrace debate. Also, Chase Utley did absolutely nothing wrong.

  1. Can’t blame the kid! He’s just a young baller with way more social current events in his feed from day 1. With out internet we born in late 70’s still we’re educated on Bill Buckners error as sports became our Fun Time media when ESPN shoved the history down our throat. Sports Center would of been passed his bedtime. But wait, it’s now online 24/7

  2. “Lux, 21, was born in 1997, eleven years after the famous home run.”

    97 – 88 = ?

  3. It’s because he grew up in Wisconsin. Everyone in SoCal of all ages has heard about it especially since nothing has happened here since
