Dodgers GM Says LA Looking at ‘More Big-Picture Moves’ at Trade Deadline

After an offseason spending spree of more than $1 billion, the Los Angeles thought they had assembled a World Series-worthy roster. Now, with the July 30 trade deadline less than a month away, the Dodgers have an injury list full of players who the Dodgers are counting on down the stretch.

Mookie Betts, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Max Muncy, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Joe Kelly, Ryan Brasier, Brusdar Graterol, and Michael Grove are all injured yet the Dodgers are not rushing to shop.

If they are going to shop ahead of the deadline, they will deal for “bigger-picture moves” adding players who will have an impact in October and beyond.

“I think right now it’s kind of evaluating how this group is playing. It’s still quite a talented group,” general manager Brandon Gomes told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. “Make sure we’re playing well and not having to step on anybody too much. But a lot of it will be wait-and-see on that front.

“We’re fortunate enough to be in a good spot in the division right now. So that will dictate a lot of it. So depending on how things progress – do we have to make moves that are more focused on the now or can we continue to evaluate and focus on bigger-picture moves?”

Surprisingly, the Dodgers aren’t looking to acquire starting pitching. Gavin Stone and Landon Knack have stepped into their roles nicely. However, Chicago White Sox starter Garrett Crochet would be an exception. He’s a bargain at $800,000 and has two years of club control.

There’s no need to add a shortstop. Miguel Rojas has that covered. But, they do need an outfielder. Specifically, an outfielder who can play daily while the others around platoon roles. As far as Gomes is concerned, the Dodgers will keep their focus on the bigger picture.

“That is an area where we are looking at more big-picture moves than the right now,” Gomes said. “We feel our young guys are in a good place. They’re progressing well where we don’t feel that’s a need. But the deadline is still a long ways away. We know very, very well that things do change.”

  1. Most of your pitchers are either hurt or have a history of injuries and you do not feel like you need more pitchers to win the World Series. Come on ! The Dodgers need pitching a left side infielder and an outfielder. Lets get busy or some other team will be lifting the trophy. Lets Go Dodgers!

    1. They won’t be lifting a trophy with Taylor, Biggio, Kike, Lux, and Heyward taking meaningful AB’s.

      1. We are currently built to lose in the early round(s) of the playoffs. Our pitching wonm’t be abel to get it done.

        1. I would argue that not only are we built to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs, but managed to lose then as well. Roberts has led this team to 6 straight playoff losses in the last two NLDSs, and an overall 3 – 10 record in their last 3 playoff series. Sure, it’s not all on him, but at least some of it is and his questionable decisions. Let that sink in for a minute: 3 – 10 against teams we finished 18, 22, and 16 games in front of. Failure on such an epic level. Mattingly was fired for losing in the NLCS, followed by two NLDS losses. And he had nowhere near this roster.

      2. Is it just me or does Taylor just make same swing and hope ball hits bat. Eat the salary and cut him.

  2. Get Crochet and Pham. Should have signed Profar instead of Heyward. And, I was advocating Profar and/or Duvall over Heyward in the off season.

      1. Agreed. Pham is always very quick to pull the race card too. He is an individual, not a team player and this team values culture and character. Look at the players they have brought in, Mookie, Freddie, Ohtani, Heyward, all high character guys.

  3. DAVE ROBERTS, IN TODAY’S GAME V MILWAUKEE. MADE EXACTLY THE SAME ERROR MOVE HE MADE IN THE 2017 WORLD SERIES V HOUSTON, WHEN HE TOOK DODGER CLOSER KENLEY JANSEN OUT OF HIS 9TH INNING “CLOSER ROLE ROUTINE,” AND BROUGHT HIM IN TO PITCH THE EIGHTH & NINETH INNINGS (SOMETHING HE HADN’T DONE ALL THAT SEASON) WITH THE DODGERS AHEAD. ROBERTS’ PANICKED THEN BECAUSE HE HAD NO CLUE HOW TO HANDLE PITCHERS, & HE STILL HAS NO CLUE. HE DEINITELY HAS NO ‘FEEL’ FOR A PITCHERS’ MENTAL MAKE-UP AS IT RELATES TO THEIR THEIR ROLES REGARDING WHAT THAT PARTICULAR ROLE REQUIRES, WHETHER IT’S STARTING OR MIDDLE RELIEVING, OR CLOSING OUT GAMES. THAT’S WHY YOU DON’T PITCH A CLOSER IN THE 8TH INNING, SINCE IT’S A DIFFERENT MENTAL APPROACH VIS A VIE CLOSING A GAME IN THE 9TH INNING. BECAUSE OF ROBERTS’ LACK OF EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, STRATEGIC THINKING, BASED ON YEARS OF PLAYING & MANAGING EXPERIENCE, JANSEN GOT HIT UP, THE ASTROS TIED THE GAME, & WON THE 2ND GAME OF THE SERIES IN EXTRA INNINGS. THE SERIES WAS THEN TIED AT 1-1, GOING TO HOUSTON. THE DODGERS LOST THAT (2017) SERIES 4-3 BECAUSE OF ROBERTS STUPID MOVE WHEN HE PANICKED ,AND TOOK JANSEN OUT OF HIS 9TH INNING, CLOSER ROLE, MENTAL ZONE, AND PUTJANSEN IN FOR A 2 INNING SAVE!
ROBERTS PANICKED AGAIN TODAY V THE BREWERS WHEN HE BROUGHT IN EVAN PHILLIPS IN THE 8TH, ONCE AGAIN TAKING A CLOSER OUT OF HIS ROLE & ROUTINE, HIS CLOSER MENTALITY, & MILWAUKEE TIED THE GAME, 3-3.
ROBERTS’ “GUT MOVES” COST LA ONE WORLD SERIES; YET HE STILL HASN’T LEARNED, AND HE WILL COST THEM AGAIN WITH HIS BAD BASEBALL BLUNDERSS. PAT MURPHY, THE MILWAUKEES MANAGER HAS BEEN COACHING & MANAGING SINCE THE 80’S, IN COLLEGE AND THE PROS. HE ALSO SERVING AS FORMER BREWER MANAGER, CRAIG COUNSEL’S BENCH COACH. HIS TEAM IS TOUGH, AND MANAGED VERY WELL UTILIZING THE ROSTER HE’S BEEN GIVEN. THEY PLAY HARD,AND YOU CAN SEE, AND FEEL, THEY’RE A SOLID TEAM THAT COMPETES! DAVE ROBERTS HAS BEEN GIVEN A TON OF TALENT, BUT HE BASICALLY ROLLS THE BALL OUT & SAYS “GO PLAY!” HE NEVER PLAYS SMALL BALL, NEVER PLAYS HIT AND RUN, HARDLY EVER BUNTS, NO PITCHOUTS, AND FRANKLY CAN ANYONE TELL US WHAT HIS MANAGERIAL TALENTS ARE? WE BELIEVE HE’S IN WAY OVER HIS HEAD, AND WITH TALENT LIKE LA HAS, YOU NEED A STRONG EXPERIENCED PHIL JACKSON VOICE AS THE DODGERS MANAGER! ROBERTS IS A LIGHTWEIGHT WITH LITTLE EXPPERIENCE, AND SHOULD BE FIRED AFTER THIS YEAR, REPLACED WITH A SOLID, EXPERIENCED MANAGER, SUCH AS TERRY FRANCONA. BRING HIM OUT OF RETIREMENT! HE’S A BRILLIANT MANAGER. WE PREDICT, DAVE ROBERTS WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER WORLD SERIES WITH LA. THE DODGERS NEED A NEW VOICE, A BATTLE-TESTED, REAL KNOWLEDGEABLE BASEBALL MANAGER WHO KNOWS WHAT HE’S DOING ON ALL LEVELS, AND DOESN’T ACT ON GUT FEELINGS OR IMPULSE, BUT ON SOLID MANAGERIAL, STRATEGY AND TACTICS! SCOUTMASTER DAVE AKA “MR. ROGERS” IS A NICE GUY, BUT DOES NOT COMMAND A RESPECT LIKE A NO-NONSENSE FRANCONA OR BRUCE BOCHY! GET SMART DODGERS BRASS. IF LA DOESN’T FARE WELL THIS POST SEASON, 9 YEARS OF ROBERTS’ INABILITY TO CONTEND FOR A WORLD SERIES TITLE EVERY YEAR SHOULD BE ENOUGH YO CHANGE COMMAND ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE TALENT HE’S BEEN PROVIDED WITH, AND MIS-MANAGED, OVER THOSE 9 YEARS!.

PAT MURPHY, THE MILWAUKEE MANAGER HAS BEEN COACHING & MANAGING SINCE THE 80’S, IN COLLEGE AND THE PROS. HE ALSO SERVED AS FORMER BREWERS MANAGER CRAIG COUNSEL’S BENCH COACH. UNFORTUNATELY FOR DODGER NATION, WE PREDICT, DAVE ROBERTS WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER WORLD SERIES WITH LA. 5. Here’s what the Dodgers need yet IMHO.
A starting pitcher, Crochet or Skubal.
A corner outfielder, Brent Rooker or Bryan Reynolds and a third baseman, Rafael Devers.
Let’s see how good Friedman and Gomes really are.

    1. Rafael Devers? Why in the world would Boston trade him after just signing him long term? Maybe Boston will take CT3 and Lux back in return too. Jeez.

  6. Here is a proverbial disaster : After the trade deadline, the Dodgers still have Taylor, Kike, Biggio,, Lux, Yarbough and Heyward but not Vargas, Pages or Outman! Btw, they need a third baseman (obviously) but if they don’t get one, I can play third and strike out 104% of the time just like everyone the Dodgers have tried. I’m 92 years old but not quite as fast as I was 10 years ago.

  7. Just sign Trevor Bauer back. He was railroaded and would at least recoup some investment. Stuff like cutting him but keep Chris Taylor is why I don’t think they are serious about winning
