Dodgers: Hyun-Jin Ryu Ranked Among Best Starting Pitchers in MLB

Former MLB pitcher, and current MLB analyst, Dontrelle Willis gave his thoughts on who the current top-5 pitchers are in the Major Leagues. That list included Astros pitchers Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, Mets ace Jacob deGrom, and Reds pitcher Luis Castillo. Moreover, it included Dodgers ace Hyun-Jin Ryu in the 4 spot.

Dontrelle Willis had this to say about Ryu.

[Ryu] has a 2.00 ERA this late in the season… that’s impressive. He keeps everyone off balance he throws any pitch in any count, and he can navigate through any offense that’s hot. I love watching him pitch.

It was surprising to see Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer left off this list. Both Ryu and Scherzer are in the hunt for the NL Cy Young award this season. Both have dominated in their own ways for most of the season, but both have also struggled with some health issues of late.

Dontrelle Willis made good points about Hyun-Jin Ryu, but he likely should be a top 3 starting pitcher if they are going solely based off this season, which it seemed like they were.

Ryu has not been on top of his game in his last 2 outings, but skipping a start and getting the lefty rested and healthy would do diligence for the Dodgers in October.
