The Dodgers’ ‘Ideal’ Trade Deadline Target Has Become Obvious
The July 30 MLB trade deadline is steadily approaching, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to make a move or two to shake up the roster. It’s almost imperative that the Dodgers make a move, especially on the pitching front, as they’ve suffered injuries to all but one of their season-opening starters.
The Dodgers’ situation could elicit some desperation, but help should be available on the trade market. White Sox ace Garrett Crochet is the best available pitcher, and would bolster the Dodgers’ rotation both short-term and long-term.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Crochet represents an “ideal” fit for the Dodgers.
“What they would like to do is add a starting pitcher, because they have questions with all of their starters in one sense or another. So a guy like Garrett Crochet would be ideal. He has an inning question surrounding him as well, but the way the Dodgers can operate their pitching staff and maneuvering different bodies, they can fit him in even if he has to go to the bullpen or pitch in a bulk role in the second half.”

As Rosenthal said, Crochet’s workload is a concern. He’s already pitched a career-high 105.1 innings in his first season as a starter.
Nonetheless, Crochet is the type of pitcher who could get the Dodgers over the top. He’s having a career year with the White Sox, going 6-6 with a 3.08 ERA, 146 strikeouts, an opponents’ batting average of .203, and a 0.97 WHIP while throwing 1,691 pitches. There’s a good chance the White Sox will send him elsewhere, and expect the Dodges to be the first in line when it comes to the southpaw ace.
Crochet is a former first-round draft pick, as Chicago selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2020 draft. The Dodgers desperately need healthy starters, and Crochet could be that guy.

The bigger question is; Does Crochet want to come to the Dodgers? He’s not blind to the endless string of injuries that have decimated the rotation, bullpen, and bench. And it’s not difficult to look deeper and see the Dodgers are having problems with consistency, and bringing a “can do” winning attitude to work each day. Runners left in scoring position has handed Glasnow and others more than a few defeats this season. Would I want him on the team? Yes! I just hope the prevailing attitude doesn’t tear him apart.
Mr. Dodgers Fan Since 1958; very interesting points of view and I agree. The one on which I most agree, is the endless pitching injuries. Maybe the frequency of pitching injuries are nearly the same with most teams — I “dunno” since I only follow the Bums. It seems to me that for the last several years the Dodgers have had an abundance of pitchers on the injured list. Is it an organizational problem? Also, it appears that the Dodgers have lost the ability to execute fundamentals like bunting and moving runners over. All these problems and the Dodgers still have an eight game lead. Not all bad!
