Dodgers Injury News: Daniel Hudson Set to Restart Return Attempt, Will Test Left Knee off the Mound

The Dodgers have been missing a key piece of their bullpen all season long in RHP Daniel Hudson.

Hudson, who tore his ACL last June, was supposed to be ready by spring training of this season. However, one setback led to another, and suddenly, we’re about to be into June, and Hudson is still without a timetable for a return.

On Monday, we got a new update on Hudson’s recovery, courtesy of Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, and it could be good news. Here’s what he had to say:

“Dodgers RHP Daniel Hudson recently had cortisone injection in his surgically repaired left knee. Will throw a bullpen session in LA on Tuesday and hopes to ‘ramp up’ activity in the next week or so by throwing to hitters. He can’t put timetable on return. ‘As soon as possible.'”

Hopefully, all goes well in the bullpen session, and Hudson is able to start throwing to hitters as soon as possible. Because thus far this season, the Dodgers bullpen has missed him.

Hudson was gearing up to be one of the top candidates to fill the Dodgers’ closer role this season, but instead, they’ve been forced to go to a makeshift closer-by-committee. When they’re able to save Evan Phillips for the ninth inning, he’s been the go-to guy. However, when they have to use him earlier in the game to get out of a jam or face the heart of the lineup — which has happened multiple times — they’re left in a bit of an unnerving situation.

So hopefully, Hudson continues to progress, and is able to return sometime in June when he’s eligible to come off the 60-day injured list. If all goes well with the bullpen session and facing live hitters, Hudson will still need to go on a rehab assignment before returning. But still, knowing there’s a return date coming up will be a huge boost to the Dodgers bullpen.

We’ll continue to update you on Hudson’s progress, but let’s hope these next steps go smoothly without any more setbacks.
