Dodgers Interested in Signing Reliever to Short-Term Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers began their business this offseason on Wednesday, bringing back utility infielder Miguel Rojas on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, but their job is far from done this winter.

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya and Katie Woo report the Dodgers are still looking to address their bullpen this offseason, and are looking towards short-term contracts while still trying to remain in contention for top names.

“With the Winter Meetings set to begin next week in Orlando, the Dodgers’ work is far from done,” Ardaya and Woo wrote. “Addressing the bullpen is a top priority. The Dodgers are firmly in the mix on that front this winter, as always. But their relief pursuits, as of now, are trying to thread a tight needle. They want to be engaged on several of the top relievers available on the market, league sources said, but have tried to stick to shorter-term frameworks.”

The Dodgers have so far been unsuccessful in their search, with three of their potential relief options already choosing to play elsewhere.

Raisel Iglesias made a quick decision to return to the Atlanta Braves on a one-year deal despite the Dodgers’ interest, Ryan Helsley, a trade target at the deadline for the Dodgers, joined the Baltimore Orioles on a two-year deal and — most recently — Devin Williams signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the New York Mets after a disappointing season with the Yankees.

The Dodgers still have plenty of options in free agency, though, and will surely be more aggressive in pursuing a reliever after their struggles. Highly sought-after closers such as Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez and Pete Fairbanks are still on the market, and all three would provide a sure upgrade to a Dodgers bullpen which had its struggles towards the end of the season.

  1. Edwin Diaz. He is the best closer available. He will cost more per year and for 2-3 years more than others, but he gives them the best chance to threepeat by a significant margin, now that Devin Williams is gone.

    1. I’m not sure the Dodgers want o pay what Diaz will want for a608 year deal far in excess of the going rate they are willing to pay. I would rather they sign Robert Suarez to a four year deal or three years plus an option year for something in the 20 m,illion range. If SUarfez doesn’t want to win a WS then they could always sign Pete Fairbanks or Kenley Jansen to a shorter term, high AAV contract that would minimize their exposure,, I think Edgardo Henriquez is the closer in waiting. He just needs a little more seasoning and better command and his stuff is definitely good enough to be a closer… Just my opinion…

      1. Sorry…meant to say that DIaz would want a 6-8 year contract and that the dodgers generally don’t like to sign relievers for that long…

    1. The Dodgers are hoping to sign a reliever to a short-term deal and Diaz wants a long-term contract. It doesn’t seem likely unfortunately.
