Dodgers: Justin Turner Reacts to Roberto Clemente Award Win

Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner doesn’t know what the future holds for him for 2023, but on Monday night he was named the 2022 Roberto Clemente Award winner, awarded annually to the “player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

For Turner, the honor only increases the responsibility he and his wife, Kourtney, feel to do their part in the city of Los Angeles.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this honor. My wife and I have put our heart and soul into giving back to the city of Los Angeles and trying to lift people up in times of need, and to be recognized on this platform here at the World Series is very special. Our work isn’t done. With this award comes a greater responsibility and we look forward to impacting more lives in the future.”

Turner also felt the weight of former Dodgers winners as well as the man the award is named for, the great Clemente, who passed away in a New Years Eve plane crash in 1972 on his way to deliver supplies and aid to the victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. Clemente’s sons were seated next to Turner at the ceremony where he accepted the award.

“As a Los Angeles Dodger, the bar was already set pretty high for Kourt and I with guys like Steve Garvey and Clayton Kershaw, who are obviously previous winners. To be able to follow in their footsteps and try to make the organization proud and make the Clemente family proud is something that we hold near and dear to our hearts. I just want to say thank you (to the Clemente family) for being here and for this opportunity. Just because we’re getting this award today, it doesn’t mean we’re done. There’s still a ton of work to do and we can’t wait to continue to impact the lives of others.”

Justin and Kourtney really are a couple the Clementes can be proud to honor and that Dodger fans can be proud to root for. Congratulations to the Turners!

  1. I am so proud of yu Justin Turner keep up the good work that you and your wife do!!

  2. No to nitpick, but another former Dodger is a Clemente award winner: Curtis Granderson. Granted, he only played the 2nd half of the 2017 season, but he’s a former Dodger nonetheless. Congrats to the Turner couple, a class act long overdue for this award.
