Dodgers’ Kiké Hernandez Sends Clear Message After World Series Game 2

“Hopefully we only have to play 3 more.”

Los Angeles Dodgers utility star Kiké Hernández has a similar mindset to what presumably many fans are feeling after Game 2 of the World Series.

Whether the message that the new Dodgers all-time leader in postseason appearances sent to the Blue Jays was dealing more with keeping the foot on the gas after his team evened the series, and less about taking a shot at Toronto, Hernández was clear about where he wants to clinch the first back-to-back title in quarter-century, no less.

Even when Hernández was asked about playing in a game that made him the Dodgers’ leader in postseason appearances, he started off his response reminding the world about what is most important to him at this moment.

“Right now, it means to me that we are three games away from winning a World Series,” Hernández said, eliciting a laugh from SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson. “It’s a truly special accomplishment. Obviously there’s been a lot of really big names, a lot of history in this franchise, a lot of postseason games played on this team, and for a guy like me to have the most games played, unbelievable.

“I don’t even know how to answer that question, but I guess I’m proud that I’ve lasted this long to be able to get this opportunity. Hopefully we only have to play 3 more.”

So far this postseason, in classic Hernández fashion, the utility star has stepped up.

During the regular season, Hernández hit .203 with a .621 OPS. Across his 12 postseason appearances, Hernández is hitting .273 with a .697 OPS.

The next three games of the World Series will all be at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers have only clinched one World Series at home (1963) and would have been able to in 2020, but the Fall Classic was held at a neutral site.

  1. Kike’ hasn’t hit HR’s like he has in other post seasons. He has had a few doubles. But he has swung at some bad pitches. Hopefully, he has given fans something to look forward to in the next three games.
