Dodgers: Max Muncy Quietly Heating Up At the Plate

After lots of debate and conversation over whether Max Muncy should remain in the Dodgers lineup,  Dave Roberts stayed confident in the veteran and it’s a good thing he did. Saturday night, Muncy blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth that just ignited the rest of the offense.

Dodgers fans saw a little glimmer of the Muncy that everyone missed. The Muncy that has spent the past 5 years in LA and the Muncy that Roberts still writes into the lineup every single day despite his lack of contact at the plate over the past 87 games.

In 2018, 2019, and 2021, Muncy finished the season with 35 homers. This year, he only has 11 and is on pace to finish the season with 17 total. The 32-year-old’s slashes are .170/ .313/ .329/ .642 which are all significantly lower than any of his past 6 seasons in the major leagues. He’s gone 49-for-289 and has only scored 44 times this season for the Dodgers.

After struggling for the past few months, the third baseman has seen a little glimmer of hope recently. In the past 7 games, Muncy has gone 7-for-24 including two homers, 5 runs, 6 RBI, and a .292 AVG as well as a .379 OPS.

After the game, he was asked how he feels about his season hopefully turning around since his homer in the series against the Giants.

“I just feel like if I keep focusing on the right things, eventually things are going to turn around. Maybe that’s starting. Maybe it’s not. I don’t know. All I can do is focus on doing what I can to help the team win and preparing the right way.”

And he’s done exactly that. He’s been a piece in those 74 wins and has proven that the Big Three at the top of the lineup aren’t the only players teams should fear.

“It kinda seems like our lineup has been forgotten about with a lot of this stuff that has been happening. It’s been kinda nice to go out there and prove again that we’re one of the best lineups in baseball, and there’s no question about that.”
