Dodgers’ Max Muncy Suffers Minor Setback Unrelated to Oblique Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy suffered a minor setback Friday.

The All-Star was not at the stadium for the Dodgers’ series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks because he was dealing with congestion and cold symptoms. The sickness is just another obstacle Muncy has dealt with in 2025.

Muncy has been dealing with an oblique strain on his right side since Aug. 15. He had just returned from the IL less than two weeks prior from a knee injury before sustaining another injury.

And now, the hope is that Muncy’s illness doesn’t affect his return timeline, which remains sometime next weekend when the Dodgers face the Baltimore Orioles.

“It pushes it back a little bit but I’m still holding out hope that Baltimore (next weekend) is still alive (for Muncy to be activated) but we’ll see,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said to the Orange County Register.

Muncy is scheduled to face high velocity pitching from a pitching machine on Sunday. He will also go on a short rehab assignment next week instead of rejoining the team for the series against the Diamondbacks.

Ever since Muncy went down with a knee injury at the beginning of July, the Dodgers have gone through an offensive slump. Los Angeles lost a nine-game lead in the National League West and are now in a tight race with the San Diego Padres for the division crown.

Muncy spoke about how he is able to make pitchers work and throw a lot of pitches. He also has a good track record of getting on base. The two-time All-Star said his presence in the lineup helps the Dodgers feel like they can go and attack pitches when they are up to bat.

In his last seven games before landing back on the IL, Muncy was slashing .400/.571/1.000 across 20 at-bats. He hit four home runs, nine RBIs and drew eight walks in that time frame.

Muncy’s return next weekend will hopefully solve the Dodgers’ offensive struggles in time for the final stretch of the season.
