Dodgers: Mookie Betts Shares Insight on How He Robs Home Runs Every Season

The art of robbing a home run is one of the most beautiful parts of baseball and getting to watch it happen is just a moment of pure perfection.

Mookie Betts is one of the best to do it and MLB.com even considers him one of the masters of stealing home runs. In one of their recent articles where multiple outfielders share their own personal techniques and experiences of stealing homers, Mookie shares one of his favorite memories.

For this, we have to go back seven years to when he was still with Boston. Rich Hill was on the mound working on a two-hit shutout for the Red Sox against the Orioles at Fenway Park on Sept. 25, 2015.

On the 116th pitch of the game, Chris Davis hit one out to 22-year-old Betts who was playing his first full season in the major leagues. He was ready.

“Timing up your steps early enough is key,” Betts said. “It’s very hard to do. I would say a majority of it is just pure instinct…Once you get back there, you’ve gotta decide: Are you gonna jump off one foot or two feet? Are you gonna jump into the wall or are you gonna jump and try to reach over the wall? Your jump is gonna depend on your timing.”

It’s important to note that in Fenway, the wall in front of the bullpens is five feet tall. So the jump was risky yet successful as he made the catch and landed safely. Here’s the play:

From then, people knew the guy was special and the rest is history.
