Dodgers News: Andrew Friedman Explains Lack of Pitching Trades at Deadline

The Dodgers were strangely quiet at the trade deadline this year. They landed Joey Gallo in a trade with the Yankees and sent off a couple of arms in addition to Jake Lamb. Garrett Cleavinger was dealt to the Rays and Mitch White was sent off to Toronto for a couple of lower-level arms. But aside from that, they didn’t seem very active.

And that was probably for a very good reason. The Dodgers have an incredibly long list of star talent on the injured list right now, and most are expected back before the regular season comes to a conclusion. That seems to be why they felt okay about running with the guys that they have.

Andrew Friedman spoke with media members on Tuesday about the deadline. And it sounds like although they were active and monitoring the market, they wanted to stick with the guys that were coming back, especially given the premium price of deadline talent.

“We feel really good about the potential for what our pitching staff could look like in October. We’re not relying on all of them coming back and being great. Some combination of that, I think puts us in a really good position to have a really strong October pitching staff. So with the way our guys have performed, with the guys we have coming back, we felt really good about that group.”

The guys that Friedman is talking about could form pretty incredible pitching on their own. Dustin May, Walker Buehler, Blake Treinen, and Danny Duffy could all make a return before the Dodgers get into the postseason. It’s important to note that the lack of trades wasn’t because he expected all of them back or even all of them back at full strength.

But there was obviously premium talent available at the deadline. Luis Castillo, Frankie Montas, Raisel Iglesias, Jordan Montgomery, Noah Syndergaard, and Michael Fulmer were just a few of the big names that moved.
