Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Headed to the Injured List

It’s about the most Friday the 13th news of all time. The Dodgers were supposed to be having Clayton Kershaw go for them tonight against the Phillies. Kersh was coming off of a dominant performance against the Cubs last weekend. But he will not be making his scheduled start.

The Dodgers announced today that Kershaw was headed to the injured list. The team was calling it an inflammation of the SI joint. A quick Google confirms that is likely an issue with his lower back. The veteran southpaw has had a history of issues with that back.

But the timing couldn’t be worse. The Dodgers are already struggling with this long stretch of games, which is why they called up Ryan Pepiot to make his big league debut earlier in the week. Kershaw was also off to a red-hot start, putting up potential Cy Young numbers.

Kershaw missed his Opening Day start back in 2019 with a shoulder isse. That broke his streak of consecutive opening starts for the Dodgers. But he had his back flare up back in 2014, the first time in his career that he went on the injured list. He experience back pains again in 2016, 2017, 2018, and again in 2020.

For now, the hope is that it’s obviously a minor thing. But the Dodgers will start Walker Buehler in his placed and have recalled Garrett Cleavinger to fill his spot on the roster. More from Dave Roberts should be coming later.
