Dodgers News: Dave Roberts ‘Commends’ Tony Gonsolin for Trying to Play Through Injury

One of the biggest issues for the Dodgers this season has been their inconsistent pitching. It has caused problems all year long and has been uncharacteristic of this team in years past.

Both the starting rotation and bullpen have slowly come together to play better, but there are still some cracks in the armor.

One of those cracks has been starter Tony Gosolin, who hasn’t pitched well at all recently. However, after yet another bad start against the Miami Marlins on Friday night, it was announced that he has been dealing with an elbow injury.

He is now heading to the injured list and is unlikely to play the rest of the season. Gonsolin gave the team everything that he had by playing through the injury, and manager Dave Roberts appreciated his efforts.

“It’s been six weeks where he hasn’t felt great, so I do commend him wholeheartedly,” Roberts said. “I think he’s continued to gain the respect of the guys in the clubhouse and never made an excuse. But this is something that it’s still symptomatic. I mean, was it pain free? Probably not. But I know as an organization, we were very clear in saying and knowing that you’re not going to hurt yourself worse, and we’re not going to try to do that to the player.”

Per The OC Register

Gosonlin has been one of the least effective players for the Dodgers of late, but you have to give him credit for trying. He is a tough player, and you can understand the desire to help his team out.

On the year, Gonsolin holds an ERA of 4.98 with 82 strikeouts over 103 innings of work. He gave the team all he could, but there was talk of replacing him in the rotation even before the injury came out.

His career has been filled with injuries, and it’s hard to fully put together a consistent career when that happens. He even started this season on the injured list and now heads back for the second time.

Gonsolin was an All-Star last season but never seemed to be able to recreate his pre-All-Star game festivities form.

“I do think that there’s something probably with the mechanics that over time gets changed and manipulated (because of the injury),” Roberts said. “So I don’t know, don’t think there’s a really clear answer. But I think all of it has led to the inflated ERA and performance.”

Per The OC Register

LA has multiple options to replace Gonsolin in the rotation. Ryan Pepiot got the bulk of the innings on Saturday in the first game of the doublehedaer and makes the most sense as the replacement, but the team could also look to rookie Emmet Sheehan or even Gavin Stone.

Either way, we hope that Gonsolin gets healthy soon and can return to form next season. Even if that isn’t with the Dodgers.
