Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Feels The Edge May Have Been Lost Following Clinch

After keeping up their intensity pretty well for the first few weeks after the games became meaningless, the Dodgers have finally hit a lull, losing three straight games to the Rockies heading into today’s series (and season) finale.

Trea Turner has struggled the past month, and Freddie Freeman has posted three straight 0-for-4 games and watched what looked like a sure bet to get to 200 hits fizzle away. The offense overall has scored just four runs in the three losses. Basically everyone except Trayce Thompson has been off for the last week or four.

But L.A. manager Dave Roberts, when asked by the media after the game if he’s concerned about all the struggles, didn’t seem overly worried.

“I’m not worried. It’s not worrisome. I do think it’s a part of some human nature that there’s a little edge that’s not there given the circumstances. But, the guys that aren’t hitting well … there’s guys in the cage right now trying to work through some things. It’s not from lack of effort. We’ll be ready when it counts.”

The Dodgers have one more game that doesn’t count, then five days off, so hopefully the rest and relaxation will help the entire team come into the NLDS ready to fire on all cylinders and pound the solid pitching staff of whichever of the Padres and Mets survives the Wild Card round.

The hallmark of this team has been their ability to take each game as it comes with a focus on today. The players have led this mindset, and you have to imagine they’ll be having some great conversations during their time off.

  1. The edge for the Dodgers will be their deep roster. The Big Trio are already playing up to their name with Betts, Turner, and Freeman hitting consistantly and generating runs. However, the biggest edge they have comes in the later bats with people like Max Muncy coming back to life, Cody Bellinger starting to find his groove, and the ever versitile Chris Taylor. But the biggest surprise the Dodgers yet to see preform in the post season but has already had his clutch moments is Trayce Thompson. The only concern the Boys in Blue have is their starting rotation. Who do you feel will be the rock for the pitching? Julio Urias is coming off a tremendous season, however it seems a lot of his fellow pitchers have fallen off as of late. Tony Gonsolin has been struggling, Dustin May has not seemed himself at all, as well as Clayton Kershaw. Though Kershaw has seen some resurgance these last two starts, but the other two aces seem to be lacking for one reason or another.

  2. While the Dodgers have a strong trio, their biggest strength coming into the post season seems to be their depth in the batting lineup. With Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy coming back to life, Chris Taylor being his usual reliable self. They even have a wildcard in the lineup in Trayce Thompson. What is concerning is more their pitching rotation. With Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May having struggles, Clayton Kershaw seemingly coming out of his struggles, the only real consistent pitcher seems to be Julio Urias. Who of the starting rotation do you think needs to improve more? Dustin May seems to be the answer as he needs to be the bedrock for the rotation for the Dodgers.
