Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Growing More Optimistic About Tony Gonsolin Returning

Anytime you hear news that your All-Star pitcher is nearing a return echoes relief and huge moments coming soon. For Tony Gonsolin, who has been out with a forearm injury, a near return is in the cards according to Dave Roberts.

No question the Dodgers excel at a new level with Gonsolin in the lineup who currently posts a 2.10 ERA with a 16-1 record on the season. The Dodgers still want to remain cautious with the postseason spot already locked in, but it doesn’t mean Roberts can’t be excited as he expects Gonsolin’s contribution in October (quotes via MLB).

“I do feel that he’s going to be able to contribute in some capacity, which I know is important to him.”

Gonsolin is used to a postseason role so naturally he is ready to make an impact for the team. However, as the team remains cautious, his role in the postseason can be different than what he’s used to (quotes via Bill Plunkett, The OC Register).

“My messaging to Tony was let’s come out with a net positive each day. If we can continue to do that once we get closer we’ll know what we have. For me to speculate what it looks like now is just not fair.”

It’s clear the Dodgers have the firepower to make a deep run, as they have show all season long, so rushing Gonsolin back to a major role early in the postseason may be a risk not worth taking.

“Everything is on the table – as it should be. But it’s all contingent on how he’s feeling. It’s about winning a baseball game, winning a series, preventing runs, scoring runs. So however we can do that – whether it’s a little bit more creative or not normal, I don’t think we’re concerned about it. Nor are our players.”

Gonsolin has seven postseason appearances in his career, four as a relief. However, the first time All-Star looks ready to make the jump to a postseason starter even if the time for that comes later than expected.

  1. They seem to have had a lot of arm problems the last 2-3years. I do not know if it is overwork or underwork by their pitchers.
