Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Has High Praise for Gavin Stone’s Focus and Intangibles
Gavin Stone has been a bright, young prospect on the pitching mound for your Los Angeles Dodgers for the past three seasons. He is the result of an excellent group of scouts for LA and has improved every single year, dominating his competition in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old recorded a 1.48 ERA last season alone, and suited up at every minor league level.
If there is one thing about Stone to like, it is that he has conquered every single opportunity he’s been given by the team. A lot of members involved in the franchise have been ecstatic when talking about the young pitcher. He is already impressing in Spring Training, most notably showing a smooth changeup in a game against the Padres.
Team manager Dave Roberts has been more than satisfied with how Stone has performed so far this Spring and can’t wait to see what else he’ll offer the squad moving forward. He is someone that Roberts mentioned he’s keeping an eye on to potentially get some starts early in the season, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
“He sort of just fits in, and then when he takes the mound with work,” said Roberts. “It’s a focus that a lot of young players, pitchers don’t have that appreciation for what that means. There’s an elite focus there. Then you layer on the stuff, it’s plus command. It’s a plus fastball, and it’s a plus-plus changeup and a pretty good slider. All those ingredients, a lot to like.”
The Dodgers certainly have a load of young talent but they will have to grow up quickly seeing that many of them will be given roles with big responsibilities. Stone looks to be high on LA’s list of priorities among this group and he must keep that same “prove-it” mentality to help them win some ball games this season.
