Dodgers News: Dave Roberts is Seeing a Different Version of Kiké Hernandez

In somewhat of a surprise move, the Dodgers acquired Kiké Hernandez from the Boston Red Sox several days before the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Hernandez was by no means an attractive trade candidate, as the center fielder-turned-shortstop was batting just .222/.279/.320 in Boston.

However, since his return to LA, Hernandez has been heating back up.

In August, Hernandez is batting .321 with a .861 OPS and 10 RBI across 17 games. Hernandez, who played for the Dodgers for six years before joining the Red Sox, has impressed manager Dave Roberts upon his return.

“I think it sort of goes with experience, and he’s experienced a lot since he’s left here. Some good, some not so good,” Roberts said in a pregame scrum recently. “I do think that him coming back here a second time, there’s a lot of gratitude and realizing how good it is to play in a Dodger uniform in any capacity. And so I think that it’s showing the benefits of it and I think that he’s got complete clarity and joy to be back.”

Hernandez’s best season with the Dodgers came in 2018 when he hit 21 home runs and averaged .256 at the plate. Hernandez’s initial departure came at a time when he wanted to be an every-game player instead of being selectively used against left-handed pitchers.

Now, Roberts says, things have changed.

“I think that he always is going to want for more and I have no problem with that,” Roberts said. “I do think that coming back here under these circumstances, there is a complete acceptance and understanding of whatever is asked of you, where maybe the first go-around that wasn’t always the case.

The Dodgers have made good use of Hernandez as they continue to dominate August. Other than a single loss to San Diego, the Dodgers have won every game in August. With their hot streak, they have continued to distance themselves in the NL West. The Dodgers own a 9 game lead over the San Francisco Giants.
