Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Positive Blake Treinen Will be Back

Four injured Dodgers pitchers — Tony Gonsolin, Brusdar Graterol, David Price, and Blake Treinen — threw bullpen sessions at Chase Field on Wednesday.

After the sessions, according to Bill Plunkett in the Orange County Register, Dave Roberts said Graterol and Treinen, both of whom were placed on the IL just shortly after returning from more serious injuries, could be close to returning.

Roberts went into more detail on Treinen’s outing:

“For me, it looked normal,” Roberts said of Treinen. “He wasn’t guarding. It was clean. The stuff was good. So I expect him to face hitters in the coming days.”

Treinen was placed on the IL last week, backdated to September 7, so he’ll be eligible to return a week from now. With such a short stint, he likely wouldn’t need a rehab assignment, so hopefully he will return when he is eligible.

Getting Treinen and Graterol back would be a huge boost for a Los Angeles bullpen that might end up with more deserving arms than roster spots in the postseason. With a limit of just 13 pitchers and possibly as many as six “starters” on the roster (even if some of them might be used as long relievers), there might only be room for seven true relievers. That will make for some tough decisions for a L.A. management team that has to choose between Treinen, Graterol, Evan Phillips, Craig Kimbrel, Alex Vesia, Caleb Ferguson, Chris Martin, Tommy Kahnle, Yency Almonte, David Price, and others.
