Dodgers News: Former Reliever Calls it a Career

Your average Dodgers fan might not remember the name Tony Watson. But many should know that the team once traded Oneil Cruz to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal for Watson. Cruz is now the number 26 prospect in all of baseball and has a very high ceiling.

But the Dodgers did have a need for relievers back in 2017 en route to a World Series appearance. Watson appeared in 24 games for them that year, pitching to a 2.70 ERA and posting a 156 ERA-plus in the process. He was huge for them down the stretch when they needed it.

Watson was also phenomenal in the playoffs for the Dodgers. Between the NLCS and the World Series, he did not allow a single run to be charged to him across 9 appearances. And now, the former reliever is calling it a career after 11 years in the big leagues.

“Thank you to all my teammates, peers, coaches, and support staff for all the cherished memories along the way, for providing support to keep me on the field, and experiences that will last a lifetime. Thank you to the Pirates, Dodgers, Giants, and Angels organizations and their fans for the support and opportunity to live out a childhood dream. Thank you to my wife and kids for being with me every step of the way and to my family and friends for always being there and supporting me through it all.”

Interestingly enough, Watson is the MLB career leader in holds. That’s not exactly a stat that anyone would even realize, but it’s Watson’s claim to fame. He certainly did that for the Dodgers, operating as a really good middle-man to get the ball to Kenley Jansen
