Dodgers News: Gavin Stone Confirmed for Second Big League Start, Rotation vs Braves Comes Together

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves are getting set for a three game series this week at Truist Park. This will mark the first meeting between the two first place clubs this season. Getting the ball first for LA is rookie right-hander Gavin Stone who will be making his second career start as a big leaguer.

Manager Dave Roberts spoke with reporters before the game on Sunday, confirming the start for Stone. He said he expects Stone to fare much better than he did in his debut two weeks ago at Dodger Stadium.

“The unfamiliarity of [a big league game], the novelty of it, he’s already done that. Also, I think he’s throwing the baseball better in general. The changeup is better. The fastball command is better. So I just think that second time around, he’ll be a lot more comfortable than he was the first time.”

Stone allowed 4 runs over 4 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies in his MLB debut earlier this month. Since then, he’s allowed just 3 earned runs over 11 innings at the Triple-A level.

The Dodgers expect Stone to remain in the rotation for the foreseeable future as injuries have taken down two of the five pitchers in the starting five. Gavin will face off against veteran hurler Charlie Morton.

It’s Miller Time

After Stone, the Dodgers are set to turn to another rookie right-hander, number one pitching prospect Bobby Miller who will be making his MLB debut in Atlanta on Tuesday. The 24-year-old has a 5.65 ERA in 4 starts at Triple-A this season. He’ll face Atlanta ace Spencer Strider.

Tony Gonsolin, the grizzled veteran in this case, makes his 6th start since coming off the injured list. He faces Bryce Elder.

Tale of the Tape

The Braves picked up their 29th win on Sunday and have a 5 game lead over the Miami Marlins in the NL East. Despite the win, Atlanta is on a little bit of a down streak winning only 4 of their last 10 games.

With the loss on Sunday, the Dodgers fell to 29-19 but still hold a 2 game lead over the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

The Dodgers won 4 of 6 games against the Braves last season, outscoring them 25 runs to 17.
