Dodgers News: GM Hints at Position Change for Mookie Betts in 2024
The Los Angeles Dodgers could look a whole lot different in 2024, and they just might need to. No matter how great 2023 was, only the sour taste of an embarrassing three and out in the postseason will remain for fans. But, again, there were plenty of positives from the regular season.
Another 100 win campaign. The emergence of rookies like James Outman and Bobby Miller. And the newfound versatility of superstar Mookie Betts.
As injuries besieged the Dodgers in the early months of the season, Betts was sort of savior for manager Dave Roberts. With Gavin Lux’s season ending in the spring due to a knee injury and nagging maladies affecting veteran defender Miguel Rojas, Betts slotted in at shortstop for the first time in his career and opened the door to a new utility role for LA.
He excelled all over the diamond on defense, playing right field, shortstop, and second base.
This week, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said he anticipates more of the same from Mookie in 2024.
Dodgers rookie Miguel Vargas was a disappointment in his debut season. Vargas came in with such high hopes but was sent back to the minors after failing to show he could hit at the pro level. We now know why he struggled mightily, and with injuries behind him, maybe he could be the player the fans and organization hope he’d be.
Mookie has shown he is more than capable of playing at second base. First of all, he was drafted as a second baseman in 2011, and this season, he showed he could play it at a Gold Glove level. In 2023, at second, he spent 485 innings there, had 87 putouts, 138 assists, only two errors, and a fielding percentage of .991.
The 30-year-old star is more than capable, and we cannot wait to see what other web gems he produces on the infield dirt. One big final takeaway from all of this is, hopefully this means the Dodgers will be in on adding a big bat in the free agent outfielders market.

Busch at 2nd or 3rd. Muncy on the Trade Block.
Sounds very interesting, you could also consider CT-3 and Austin Barns on the trading block to make it just as interesting..
Betts at 2B. Muncy at 3B. Busch and Vargas platoon in LF. But they are also trade chips in a trade for a starter. Heyward and Chris Taylor platoon in RF until Busch/Vargas are traded, then Taylor goes to LF. Soto in LF in 2025. Buehler, Bobby Miller, Pepiot, Sheehan, Michael Grove, Gavin Stone make up the current rotation. Some help is needed in the rotation. One or two of Yamagato, Snell, Burnes, Cease, Glasnow. Kershaw, Dustin May cannot be counted on for any innings. Anything from Kershaw and Dustin May after the ASG would be a bonus.
You just described an atrocious offense.
The dodgers are lost as long as they have the DOC. Mookie a good player but can’t perform when it counts.
Nonsense ! Mookie is a proven winner , we need to trade you away for a different fan ! LOL
I would think now that CK is not a factor as of the present time in rotation that Dodgers should find an additional LHP for the rotation.
