Dodgers News: Jake Marisnick Moved to 60-Day IL as Gus Varland Added to Active Roster

The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially made the roster move we were expecting on Tuesday, adding RHP Gus Varland to the active roster. The team needed to make room on the 40-man roster, though, and outfielder Jake Marisnick was placed on the 60-day IL to do so.

Varland is being called up to replace RHP Joe Kelly, who was placed on the injured list on Sunday with right forearm inflammation.

Varland was picked in the Rule 5 Draft this year by the Milwaukee Brewers, and made eight appearances with them. Through his first seven, he had an impressive 2.25 ERA. However, he got shelled in his final appearance, allowing nine runs in two-thirds of an inning before being DFA’d and sent back to the Dodgers.

In Triple-A with the Dodgers, Varland has been dominant, sporting a 2.16 ERA in 33.1 innings. He’ll hope to continue that success at the big league level in LA, and potentially stick around in a bullpen that’s still looking for help.

As for the corresponding move, Marisnick was moved to the 60-day IL with the hamstring strain he’s been dealing with since mid-July. It’s unfortunate for Marisnick, who got two hits in five at-bats with the Dodgers after joining them on July 13 on a minor league deal.

At this point, don’t expect to see Marisnick again this season, especially with the trade deadline additions of right-handed bats Kikè Hernández and Amed Rosario.
